TWO GUIDED CITIES. ONE SAHARA NIGHT.

Nine days in Morocco, with time inside both historic medinas

This private 9-day Morocco itinerary begins in Casablanca and travels through Rabat and Chefchaouen before Volubilis, Meknes and Fes. Two nights in Fes give you a full day with a licensed local guide, exploring the medina’s craft quarters and historic streets without an intercity transfer that day.

Cross the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley toward Merzouga, where your Sahara stay includes a camel trek planned around sunset and a private en-suite camp tent. A 4×4 transfer is available if you prefer not to ride. Continue through Todra Gorge and Dades before Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas lead you to Marrakech.

Two Marrakech nights make room for a full guided city day before your agreed departure transfer on Day 9. Your package includes eight nights, eight breakfasts and two dinners. The route has one Merzouga camp night, without a separate hotel stay or full desert exploration day.

THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

Your 9-day Casablanca to Marrakech itinerary

Eight nights in order: Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes twice, Merzouga camp, Dades and Marrakech twice. Driving estimates exclude sightseeing, meals and breaks. Guided city days and departure transfers are identified separately.

Day 1: Casablanca ⇢ Rabat

Your journey begins in Casablanca, where your private driver will meet you at Mohammed V International Airport, your hotel, or another agreed pickup point. Depending on your arrival time, begin with a visit to the magnificent Hassan II Mosque, one of Morocco’s most impressive landmarks. Built partly over the Atlantic Ocean, the mosque combines monumental architecture with intricate Moroccan craftsmanship, and an interior visit can be arranged when arrival timing and visiting hours allow; admission is separate.

After exploring Casablanca, travel north along the Atlantic coast toward Rabat, Morocco’s elegant capital and one of its four imperial cities. Compared with the energetic atmosphere of Casablanca, Rabat offers a calmer introduction to the country, with palm-lined avenues, historic monuments, landscaped gardens, and a beautiful setting along the Bouregreg River.

Subject to available time and site access, spend the remainder of the day discovering highlights such as the Hassan Tower, Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and Kasbah of the Oudayas. Wander through the kasbah’s white-and-blue lanes and enjoy views toward the river and neighboring Salé before settling into your accommodation for a relaxed first evening in Morocco.

Night 1: Rabat. Breakfast included; dinner separate.

Approx. distance: 90 km

Approx. driving time: 1–1½ hours for the Casablanca–Rabat road leg, excluding airport collection, city sightseeing and breaks

Day 2: Rabat ⇢ Rif Mountains ⇢ Chefchaouen

After breakfast, leave Rabat and begin your journey north toward the Rif Mountains. As the capital gradually disappears behind you, the scenery changes to open agricultural countryside, rolling hills, olive groves, and small rural communities, giving you a glimpse of Morocco beyond its major cities.

As you travel deeper into northern Morocco, the mountains become more prominent and the road begins winding through increasingly scenic landscapes. Your driver can make comfortable stops along the way for refreshments, photographs, or simply to enjoy the views before you approach the distinctive blue-painted town of Chefchaouen.

After arriving and checking in, spend the afternoon discovering Chefchaouen at an easy pace. Wander through its photogenic blue lanes, relax around Plaza Uta el-Hammam, browse small artisan shops, and walk toward Ras El Maa. If you feel like stretching your legs later in the day, the Spanish Mosque viewpoint offers beautiful panoramic views over the medina and surrounding Rif Mountains, particularly as the afternoon light begins to soften.

Night 2: Chefchaouen. Breakfast included; dinner separate.

Approx. distance: 250 km

Approx. driving time: 4–4.5 hours, excluding stops and breaks

Day 3: Chefchaouen ⇢ Volubilis ⇢ Meknes ⇢ Fes

Enjoy breakfast and a final look at Chefchaouen before leaving the Rif Mountains and traveling south toward Volubilis. The journey takes you through fertile countryside dotted with farms, olive trees, and traditional villages before reaching one of Morocco’s most important archaeological sites.

At Volubilis, explore the remains of the ancient Roman city, where columns, triumphal arches, foundations, and remarkably preserved mosaics reveal the scale and sophistication of the settlement that once stood here. Continue afterward to Meknes, another of Morocco’s historic imperial cities, where you can enjoy lunch and discover some of the old city’s monumental architecture and traditional atmosphere.

In the afternoon, continue toward Fes, one of Morocco’s most fascinating destinations and the country’s historic spiritual and intellectual center. After arriving, settle into your accommodation and enjoy the evening at leisure. This slower finish gives you time to rest before dedicating the following day entirely to exploring the extraordinary medina with a local guide.

Night 3: Fes. Breakfast included; dinner separate.

Approx. distance: 260 km

Approx. driving time: 4.5–5 hours, excluding sightseeing, lunch, and breaks

Day 4: Guided Tour of Fes

After breakfast, meet your licensed private local guide and begin a full day devoted to discovering Fes, a city where centuries of history remain woven into everyday life. Your exploration can begin around the impressive gates of the Royal Palace and the historic Mellah before heading toward viewpoints overlooking the sprawling old medina.

Enter Fes el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed historic quarter, and follow your guide through its maze of narrow pedestrian streets. Along the way, discover traditional souks, communal bakeries, fountains, artisan workshops, historic madrasas, and religious landmarks such as the Al-Qarawiyyin area. Depending on access and conditions, you can also visit the famous Chouara Tanneries, where leather continues to be treated and dyed using techniques passed down through generations.

Rather than rushing between monuments, your guide will help you experience the medina at a comfortable pace, with time for photographs, lunch, shopping, and spontaneous discoveries along the way. By the end of the day, you will have gained a much deeper understanding of Fes and the craftsmanship, traditions, and communities that continue to give the city its remarkable character.

Night 4: Fes, second night. Breakfast included; dinner separate.

Approx. driving: Minimal local transfers; most of the historic medina is explored on foot

Day 5: Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Middle Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, leave Fes and begin the spectacular journey south toward the Sahara. Your first stop is Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town known for its alpine-style architecture and clean, landscaped streets. Continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains and toward the cedar forests, where you may see Barbary macaques in their natural environment; sightings are not guaranteed and wildlife should not be fed.

The route continues through mountain landscapes, remote towns, rocky plateaus, and the changing scenery of central Morocco. After a lunch stop along the way, travel toward the south where the landscape becomes increasingly arid. One of the day’s most memorable viewpoints comes above the Ziz Valley, where a vast ribbon of date palms stretches through the desert beneath you.

By late afternoon, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to appear on the horizon as you approach Merzouga. Meet your camel caravan and ride into the Sahara as the temperature cools and the dunes take on warmer shades of gold and orange. The trek is planned around sunset, subject to arrival time and conditions; a 4×4 camp transfer is available if you prefer not to ride. Continue to your desert camp, where dinner and traditional music beneath the stars provide a memorable ending to one of the tour’s longest but most rewarding travel days.

Night 5: Merzouga desert camp, private en-suite tent. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 470 km

Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and breaks

Day 6: Merzouga Desert ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Dades Valley

If timing and conditions allow, wake early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, when the first light transforms the surrounding Sahara into constantly changing shades of gold. After breakfast at the camp, leave Merzouga and travel through the desert landscapes of the Tafilalet region toward Rissani, an important historic caravan town and traditional commercial center.

If your journey falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, a stop at the traditional Rissani market may be possible if timing allows, when traders, farmers, craftspeople, and residents from surrounding villages gather for one of the region’s liveliest market days. The experience offers an authentic glimpse into everyday life in southeastern Morocco. On other days, you can still make a shorter stop in Rissani before continuing toward Tinghir.

As you travel west, the landscape becomes greener around the palm oasis of Tinghir before you enter the dramatic Todra Gorge. Enjoy time to walk beneath its towering limestone cliffs and take photographs before continuing toward the Dades Valley. The final part of the journey passes traditional Amazigh villages, cultivated valleys, and unusual rock formations before you arrive at your accommodation for a relaxing evening.

Night 6: Dades Valley. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 275 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing, market visit, lunch, and breaks

Day 7: Dades Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Marrakech

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel west through some of southern Morocco’s most characteristic landscapes. The route follows valleys lined with old kasbahs, traditional villages, palm groves, and desert-colored mountains as you make your way toward Ouarzazate, often described as the gateway between the Sahara and the High Atlas Mountains.

In Ouarzazate, you can choose to make an optional visit to Atlas Studios at additional cost, time permitting, where sets from numerous international film and television productions can be explored when the studio is open to visitors. Afterward, continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the famous UNESCO-listed fortified ksar. Walk through its narrow passages, climb between its earthen buildings, and learn about its historic role along the caravan route connecting the Sahara with Marrakech.

The final section of the day takes you across the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Stop at panoramic viewpoints as the road climbs through dramatic mountain scenery before descending gradually toward Marrakech. Arrive in the late afternoon or evening, where the energy of the Red City provides an exciting contrast to the quiet valleys and desert landscapes of the previous days.

Night 7: Marrakech. Breakfast included; dinner separate.

Approx. distance: 350 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours, excluding sightseeing, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and breaks

Day 8: Full-Day Guided Tour of Marrakech

After breakfast, meet your licensed private local guide and begin a full day exploring Marrakech, one of Morocco’s most vibrant and atmospheric cities. Subject to opening hours and site access, your sightseeing can begin with some of the city’s most important historic monuments, including Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the Koutoubia Mosque area, where your guide will introduce you to the stories and dynasties that shaped the city.

Continue into the historic medina and its colorful network of souks. Walk through areas traditionally dedicated to leather, metalwork, carpets, spices, lanterns, and other Moroccan crafts while seeing artisans working in workshops tucked behind the market streets. Your guide can help you navigate the medina comfortably while leaving enough time for photographs, questions, shopping, and a relaxed lunch.

Later in the day, make your way toward Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s famous central square. As afternoon turns toward evening, the square gradually fills with food stalls, musicians, storytellers, and performers, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Morocco. After the guided visit, return to your accommodation or remain in the medina to enjoy Marrakech independently.

Night 8: Marrakech, second night. Breakfast included; dinner separate.

Approx. driving: Minimal local transfers; much of the historic center is explored on foot

Day 9: Marrakech ⇢ Marrakech Airport or Casablanca Airport

Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast and any remaining free time according to your departure schedule. If you are flying from Marrakech Menara Airport, your driver will meet you at your accommodation at an appropriate time and provide a private transfer directly to the terminal.

If your international departure is instead from Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, your driver will collect you significantly earlier for the journey north from Marrakech. The route is mainly by motorway, and sufficient time will be allowed for normal traffic, rest stops when needed, and recommended airport check-in time.

Your private Morocco journey concludes at the airport after nine days linking the Atlantic coast, imperial cities, Rif Mountains, historic medinas, Middle Atlas, Sahara Desert, dramatic southern valleys, High Atlas Mountains, and Marrakech. It is a route designed to show you several distinct sides of Morocco while balancing sightseeing, scenic journeys, cultural experiences, and time to enjoy each destination.

Finish: Marrakech Airport, or Casablanca Airport when arranged in advance and compatible with your flight. No overnight stay is included tonight.

Marrakech Airport: approximately 15–30 minutes from central Marrakech, depending on traffic

Casablanca Airport: approximately 240 km / 3–3½ hours of road travel from Marrakech, depending on traffic and road conditions; airport check-in requires additional time

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Practical details for nine days in Morocco

This is a one-way Casablanca to Marrakech itinerary, so it works particularly well with an open-jaw flight plan.

Day 5 is the longest road day. Stops in Ifrane, the cedar forest and Ziz Valley break up the journey toward the Sahara.

The Merzouga overnight includes a camel ride and desert camp, but not the full 4×4 exploration with Khamlia, Mifis mines, a nomad-family visit and the seasonal lake.

Both Fes and Marrakech include a licensed local guide. Entrance fees are separate so each guided day can be adapted to the sites you want to enter.

Bring a warm layer for the Sahara night even when daytime weather is mild. Desert temperatures can change quickly after sunset.

Day 9 can transfer you to Marrakech Airport or Casablanca Airport. Casablanca requires additional road time, so flight timing matters.

Review our cancellation policy before paying your deposit, or contact us if you are deciding between the 8-, 9- and 10-day itineraries.

Confirm arrival and departure flights

Day 1 sightseeing depends on your arrival and the sites’ opening hours. Its Casablanca–Rabat estimate covers the road leg, not airport collection and city visits. Day 9 is a departure-transfer day. Confirm your departure airport and flight before booking; Casablanca needs additional road time plus traffic and check-in buffers. An early flight may make an extra overnight near the airport more practical.

Day 7 also includes approximately 6–7 driving hours before stops. Tell us children’s ages, dietary requirements, room preferences and mobility needs. Medina lanes, kasbah paths and dunes may be uneven. Your vehicle and tent are private to your booking, but the hotels and camp may host other guests.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Questions about your 9-day Morocco itinerary

Is 9 days in Morocco enough for a first trip?

Yes. Nine days gives you enough time for a well-rounded private route through Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara Desert, Dades Valley and Marrakech. It is still an active itinerary, but the two nights in Fes and two nights in Marrakech make it more balanced than shorter seven- or eight-day routes.

Is this 9-day Morocco itinerary too rushed?

The itinerary covers a large distance, but it is structured to avoid unnecessary backtracking. The longest transfer is Fes to Merzouga, while Days 4 and 8 are dedicated guided city days with very little long-distance driving. Travelers who want a second Merzouga night should choose the 10-day itinerary.

What is the route for this Morocco itinerary from Casablanca?

The route is Casablanca to Rabat, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fes, Ifrane, the Middle Atlas Mountains, Ziz Valley, Merzouga, Rissani, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech, followed by the departure transfer on Day 9.

Does the tour visit Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca?

Yes, when your arrival or pickup schedule allows. We try to visit Hassan II Mosque before continuing to Rabat. Interior access depends on the mosque’s visiting schedule, and the entrance ticket is not included.

How much time is spent in Chefchaouen?

You spend one night in Chefchaouen. Day 2 reaches the Blue City after the drive from Rabat, with the time available for exploring depending on arrival, before you enjoy the evening in the medina before leaving for Volubilis, Meknes and Fes the next morning.

Is a guided tour of Fes included?

Yes. Day 4 is a full guided tour of Fes with a licensed local guide. The walking tour focuses on the medina, traditional artisan areas, Chouara Tanneries, historic streets and major cultural landmarks that are open and accessible on the day.

How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga?

The Fes to Merzouga journey usually involves around 7 to 8 hours of actual driving, excluding lunch, sightseeing and comfort stops. The route is broken up with stops around Ifrane, the cedar forest, Midelt and the Ziz Valley.

How long is the camel ride in Merzouga?

The camel ride is arranged around sunset, but the exact duration varies according to the desert camp location, dune conditions and operational routing. A 4×4 transfer to camp can be arranged instead if you prefer not to ride.

Does this tour include a full Merzouga 4×4 desert excursion?

No. This route includes one night in Merzouga, so it does not include the full 4×4 exploration with Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a nomad-family visit and the seasonal lake. The 10-day and 12-day itineraries are better choices if you want a complete Merzouga exploration day.

What accommodation is included during the 9 days Morocco tour?

The eight overnight stays are Rabat, Chefchaouen, two nights in Fes, one night at a Merzouga desert camp, one night in Dades Valley and two nights in Marrakech. Standard Comfort, Mid-Range and Premium accommodation categories are available, subject to availability.

Which meals are included?

Breakfast is included at all eight overnight accommodations. Dinner is included at the Merzouga desert camp and at the Dades Valley accommodation. Lunches, drinks and other dinners are not included.

What should I pack for the Sahara Desert?

Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, sunglasses, a small overnight bag, a warm layer for the evening and any personal medication. Desert temperatures can change significantly between daytime and night, especially outside summer.

Can I personalize this private 9 day Morocco itinerary?

Yes. Because this is a private tour, some accommodation, pickup, sightseeing and departure details can be personalized. Major route changes may affect driving time and price, so we will advise you if an extra night would make the itinerary more realistic.

Can Day 9 transfer me to Casablanca Airport instead of Marrakech Airport?

Yes. A private transfer from Marrakech to Casablanca Airport can be arranged when your flight schedule allows enough time for the road journey and airport check-in. Early departures may make an additional Casablanca overnight more practical.

How is the 9-day itinerary different from the 8-day Morocco itinerary?

The routes allocate time differently. Eight days includes a Skoura overnight and ends with Marrakech drop-off. Nine days skips that Skoura overnight and includes two Marrakech nights, a full guided city day and a departure-transfer day. It is not the eight-day route with one day simply appended.

How is the 9-day itinerary different from the 10-day Morocco itinerary?

The 10-day itinerary adds a second night around Merzouga and a full 4×4 desert exploration day. Choose the 9-day route if one Sahara night is enough; choose the 10-day route if the desert is a major priority.

Why choose Complete Morocco rather than another tour operator?

The most useful way to compare operators is to check the exact overnight sequence, named accommodation options, vehicle type, included local guides, desert-camp arrangements, meals, transfer details and what is excluded. On this page, Complete Morocco shows those details clearly so you can compare the itinerary on the same basis as any other provider.

How much does the private nine-day tour cost?

Indicative rates range from €1,399 per person for your own private party of 10 or more to €3,578 for one traveler. For two travelers, the indicative rate is €1,789 each. The final quote confirms dates, accommodation, availability and room arrangements; these are not shared-tour seat prices.

Is Day 9 another guided sightseeing day?

No. Day 9 is planned around breakfast, any free time your flight allows and your agreed airport transfer. The full guided Marrakech tour is on Day 8.

Is the entire camp private to our group?

Your tent is private and en-suite, and your vehicle is dedicated to your booking. The camp and hotels may host other guests.

How do payment and cancellation work?

Once you approve the itinerary and quote, the agreed deposit secures your booking. Payments can be arranged by PayPal, bank transfer or Wise. Review your booking terms and our cancellation policy before paying.
