TWO CITIES. A SAHARA JOURNEY BETWEEN.

A private desert crossing from Fes to Marrakech

This 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour takes you through Morocco’s mountain passes, palm-filled valleys and Sahara dunes. Travel south from Fes to Merzouga, continue west through Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley, then cross the High Atlas to Marrakech.

Your first evening brings the experience at the heart of the journey: a camel trek across Erg Chebbi and a night in a private en-suite desert tent. If you prefer, travel to camp by 4×4 instead. Your second night is in a private en-suite room in the Dades Valley, with dinner and breakfast included at both stops.

The vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking. Discuss sightseeing priorities and comfort breaks along the agreed route, while allowing enough time for the camp arrival and each overnight stop.

THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

Your 3-day Fes to Marrakech itinerary

Each day covers a different stretch of the route between Fes and Marrakech. Distances and driving times are approximate and may change with traffic, weather, road conditions, and sightseeing stops.

Day 1: Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Azrou forest ⇢ Middle Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga desert

Your 3 day Fes to Marrakech desert tour begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad in Fes. Leaving the city behind, travel south through the Middle Atlas Mountains to Ifrane, a mountain town known for its alpine-style architecture. Continue toward Azrou and the nearby cedar forest, where Barbary macaques can often be seen among the trees.

From the cedar forest, the journey continues through the Middle Atlas toward Midelt, with time for a lunch break along the way. As you travel farther south, the green mountain scenery gradually changes into the rocky landscapes of southeastern Morocco. Descend toward the Ziz Valley, where a panoramic viewpoint overlooks an extensive oasis of palm groves, villages, and the Ziz River.

By late afternoon, reach Merzouga at the edge of the Sahara Desert, beside the golden Erg Chebbi dunes. With timing arranged around sunset where conditions allow, begin your camel trek across the dunes toward the desert camp. Travelers who prefer not to ride camels can request a 4×4 transfer to the camp instead. After settling into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner followed by traditional Berber music and drumming around the bonfire beneath the Sahara sky.

Approx. distance: 470 km

Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and breaks

Day 2: Merzouga Desert ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Dades Valley

Wake early if you would like to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast at the desert camp. After leaving Merzouga, travel through the Tafilalet region toward Rissani, an important historic trading town. If your journey falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, you can stop at the traditional Rissani market, when the town is especially lively with local traders and residents from the surrounding villages.

Continue west toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge, where towering limestone cliffs rise above the narrow canyon. You will have time to walk through the gorge, enjoy the scenery, and take photographs before continuing through the surrounding palm groves and Amazigh villages.

In the afternoon, travel toward the Dades Valley, passing cultivated valleys and distinctive rock formations along the way. Arrive at your hotel or riad in the late afternoon, settle in, and enjoy a relaxed evening followed by dinner.

Approx. distance: 275 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and breaks

Day 3: Dades Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Marrakech

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel west toward Ouarzazate, passing kasbahs, small villages, and the open landscapes of southern Morocco. In Ouarzazate, you can optionally visit Atlas Studios, one of the country’s best-known film studios, before continuing the journey.

Next, continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the famous fortified ksar and UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have time to explore the village on foot, walk through its narrow earthen passageways, and enjoy views across the surrounding valley before continuing toward the High Atlas Mountains.

In the afternoon, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with scenic stops along the way for photographs and panoramic views. From there, descend toward Marrakech, where your Fes to Marrakech desert tour ends with drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point in the evening.

Approx. distance: 350 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and the optional Atlas Studios visit

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Questions about your Fes to Marrakech tour

What is included in a 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour?

The tour includes private transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, pickup in Fes, drop-off in Marrakech, one night at a Merzouga desert camp, one night in the Dades Valley, dinner and breakfast at both overnight stops, a sunset camel trek across Erg Chebbi, luggage transfer to camp and sandboards. Lunches, additional beverages, entrance fees, optional activities, tips and travel insurance are not included.

How much does a 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour cost?

The indicative private tour rate is €389 per person for two travelers. The full table ranges from €150 per person for 14–17 travelers to €790 for one traveler; the lowest rate is not a two-person price. Travel dates, accommodation category and availability can affect the final confirmed price.

What is the difference between this tour and the 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour?

This 3-day tour includes one night in the Merzouga desert and one night in the Dades Valley. The 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour adds a full day exploring the Merzouga area and a second night near the Sahara. The main transfer days between Fes, Merzouga, Dades Valley and Marrakech remain long; the extra day gives you more time in the desert rather than shortening those drives.

What is the difference between a private and group tour from Fes to Marrakech?

A private tour is operated only for your booking, with a vehicle and driver-guide assigned to your group. This gives you more flexibility with stops and comfort breaks. A group tour normally combines travelers from separate bookings and follows a more fixed schedule.

What is the recommended itinerary for a Fes to Marrakech desert tour?

A practical Fes to Marrakech 3 days itinerary travels from Fes through Ifrane, Azrou, the Middle Atlas Mountains and Ziz Valley to Merzouga on day one. Day two continues from the Merzouga desert through Todra Gorge to the Dades Valley. Day three passes Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.

What is the best time of year for a desert tour from Fes to Marrakech?

Spring and autumn generally provide comfortable conditions for this route. Winter can bring cold nights in Merzouga and cooler weather in the mountains, while summer temperatures in the Sahara can be very high during the afternoon. The tour can operate throughout the year, subject to road and weather conditions.

What attractions are visited on the Fes to Marrakech desert tour?

The route includes Ifrane, the cedar forest near Azrou, the Middle Atlas Mountains, Ziz Valley, Merzouga, the dunes of Erg Chebbi, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas Mountains. The Sahara desert experience also includes a camel trek and an overnight stay at a Merzouga desert camp.

What type of vehicle is used and how much driving is involved?

Vehicle type depends on your group size and availability. For 2–3 travelers, we generally use a 4×4 such as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX. Groups of 4–8 generally travel by minivan, such as a Mercedes-Benz Vito or Ford Tourneo Custom. Larger groups travel by minibus. Day one covers approximately 470 km, day two around 275 km, and day three approximately 350 km. Approximate driving times are 7–8 hours on day one, 4–5 hours on day two and 6–7 hours on day three, excluding sightseeing, meals and breaks.

Is the 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Solo travelers can book the trip as a private tour. Because the vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for one booking, the per-person cost is higher for a solo traveler than for couples or larger groups. The current solo rate is shown in the price table above.

What accommodation options are available at the Sahara desert camp?

Standard Comfort, Mid-Range and Premium categories are available. The Merzouga desert night is in a private en-suite tent. Ideal Desert Camp, Tawada Luxury Desert Camp and Antares Desert Camp are examples of the three accommodation categories. The exact camp, room features and climate-control facilities are confirmed according to the selected category and availability for your dates.

How do I book a 3-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech?

Send your travel dates, number of travelers and preferred accommodation category through the booking form. We will check the desert camp, Dades Valley accommodation and transport availability before confirming the final price. Once you approve the details, a deposit secures the booking.

Can I reach the desert camp without riding a camel?

Yes. A 4×4 transfer to camp can be arranged instead of the camel trek and is included when used as the alternative. Let us know before departure so we can organize your arrival. Luggage transfer to camp is included.

Where will I be picked up and dropped off?

Pickup is from your Fes hotel or riad on the first morning, with the meeting point and time confirmed before departure. Where a medina street is not accessible by vehicle, we will agree a nearby meeting point. The tour finishes at your Marrakech accommodation or the nearest vehicle-accessible point.

Can I take a flight from Marrakech on the final evening?

The itinerary normally reaches Marrakech in the evening, and road conditions, weather and sightseeing stops can affect arrival. We recommend spending that night in Marrakech and avoiding a tightly timed flight or train connection. Share any onward travel plans before booking.

What should families or travelers with mobility needs consider?

The route involves long hours in a vehicle, uneven paths at sightseeing stops and walking on sand around camp. Tell us the ages of children and any mobility, room or transport requirements before booking so we can check suitable arrangements. A 4×4 transfer is available instead of camel riding.

What are the deposit and cancellation terms?

Your quote will set out the deposit, balance-payment arrangements and applicable booking terms. Please review our cancellation policy and ask about any unclear terms before confirming.
