Reach the Sahara on your way from Marrakech to Fes
This private 2-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour combines a one-way road journey with a night beside the Erg Chebbi dunes. Leave Marrakech early, cross the High Atlas and pause for a panoramic view of Ait Ben Haddou before continuing to Merzouga.
The overnight stay is the focus: a private en-suite tent, dinner at camp and the chance to see the dunes at sunrise before breakfast. A camel trek is planned around sunset where timing allows, with a 4×4 camp transfer available if you prefer not to ride.
The following morning, continue north through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and Middle Atlas to Fes. Your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your group, but the distances limit how much sightseeing fits into the schedule. Expect approximately 16–18 hours of driving across the two days, plus stops.

Two days or three days?
Two days works for a short travel window, with a direct first-day drive to Merzouga. Three days divides that southern journey with a Dades Valley overnight and allows more time at the sights.

Your 2-day Marrakech to Fes itinerary
This 2 days desert tour from Marrakech combines the journey from Marrakech to Merzouga with an overnight Sahara experience before continuing north to Fes. The route covers a considerable distance in only two days, so sightseeing stops are shorter than on our 3-day and 4-day desert tours.
Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou (Panoramic Viewpoint) ⇢ Merzouga Desert
Your journey begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. Leave the city behind and climb into the High Atlas Mountains, following the winding road across the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, pause at selected viewpoints to take in the rugged valleys, high mountain scenery, and Amazigh villages before descending toward the landscapes of southern Morocco.
Because this is a long travel day, the stop at Ait Ben Haddou is kept brief and focused on a panoramic viewpoint rather than a full walking visit. From here, you can admire the UNESCO-listed ksar and its distinctive earthen architecture from across the valley. After taking photographs and enjoying the view, continue toward the Sahara without adding the Todra Gorge detour, helping keep the journey as comfortable and efficient as possible.
Continue across the varied landscapes of southeastern Morocco toward Merzouga. Gradually, the rocky plains give way to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, marking your arrival at the edge of the Sahara. Your planned desert experience is a camel trek to camp, timed around sunset where arrival and conditions allow; a 4×4 transfer is available instead. Your main luggage travels separately. Settle into your private en-suite tent and enjoy dinner at camp. Because the drive is long and daylight varies by season, we confirm departure and camp-transfer arrangements for your dates before booking; sunset itself cannot be guaranteed.
Approx. distance: 560 km
Approx. driving time: 9–10 hours excluding the panoramic stop, lunch, and comfort breaks
Day 2: Merzouga ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Midelt ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Fes
Begin the morning with the option to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast. Return from camp by camel or 4×4 as arranged, then leave Merzouga and travel north through the Tafilalet region toward the Ziz Valley, where the road rises above an extensive oasis of date palms. Stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the contrast between the green valley floor, traditional settlements, and the surrounding arid mountains.
Continue through a series of changing landscapes toward Midelt, where you can stop for lunch before entering the Middle Atlas Mountains. The scenery becomes noticeably greener as you approach the cedar forests near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques that are often seen around the woodland. From there, continue to Ifrane, a quiet mountain town known for its cooler climate, manicured streets, and alpine-inspired architecture.
The final stretch takes you through the Middle Atlas countryside toward Fes, usually arriving in the early evening depending on traffic and the number of stops made along the way. Your driver will take you directly to your hotel or riad, or to the nearest vehicle-accessible point if your accommodation is located within the pedestrian streets of the medina.

Practical details before you travel
This is a fast 2 day desert trip. Marrakech, Merzouga and Fes are separated by considerable distances. Expect long driving hours on both days.
Ait Ben Haddou is panoramic only. Day 1 includes a panoramic view rather than a walking visit so the route can continue toward Merzouga in time for the desert experience.
The camel trek is optional. If you prefer not to ride, a 4×4 can transfer you to the desert camp. Your main luggage is transported separately.
Temperatures change along the route. The trip crosses the High Atlas Mountains, Sahara Desert and Middle Atlas region. Pack layers, comfortable clothing and sun protection.
The second day is another substantial journey. After sunrise and breakfast, you travel from Merzouga through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the cedar forest before reaching Fes.
There is no full Merzouga 4×4 excursion on this 2-day itinerary. Travelers who want Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a nomad family visit and the seasonal lake should choose a longer Merzouga tour.
Consider a longer itinerary if possible. A 3-day or 4-day tour from Marrakech to Fes divides the journey more comfortably and provides additional sightseeing time.
Plan your arrival in Fes
The tour normally finishes in the evening. We recommend staying in Fes that night rather than planning a tightly timed flight or train connection. Share your arrival and onward travel plans when you enquire, so pickup and drop-off can be agreed in advance.
Questions about the two-day desert crossing
What is the itinerary for a 2-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour?
Day 1 travels from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains, includes a panoramic view of Ait Ben Haddou and continues to the Merzouga Desert for a sunset camel trek and overnight desert camp. Day 2 travels north through the Ziz Valley, Midelt, the cedar forest near Azrou and Ifrane before reaching Fes.
Is a 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes worth it?
It can be a practical choice if you have only two days and specifically want to include Merzouga while traveling from Marrakech to Fes. The tradeoff is the amount of driving. Travelers with an extra day will generally find a 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour more comfortable and better suited to sightseeing.
How much does a private 2-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour cost?
The indicative rate is €377 per person for two travelers. The table ranges from €150 per person for a private group of 10 or more to €748 for one traveler. The €150 rate does not apply to two travelers. Travel dates, accommodation category and desert camp availability can affect the final confirmed price.
What services are included in the tour package?
The tour includes private transportation, an English-speaking driver-guide, pickup in Marrakech, drop-off in Fes, one night at a Merzouga desert camp in a private en-suite tent, dinner and breakfast, a sunset camel trek, luggage transfer, sandboards and a 4×4 camp transfer when arranged instead of the camel ride.
How long does the tour take, including travel time?
Day 1 requires around 9–10 hours of actual driving between Marrakech and Merzouga. Day 2 requires approximately 7–8 hours between Merzouga and Fes. Lunch, sightseeing and comfort stops are additional.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
Spring and autumn generally provide moderate conditions. Winter can bring cold nights in the Sahara and cooler temperatures in the mountains, while summer days in the Merzouga Desert can be very hot.
What transportation is used?
Private transportation is matched to the size of your booking and may be a 4×4, minivan, or minibus. A separate 4×4 transfer can also take you to the desert camp if you do not want to ride a camel.
Are meals included?
Dinner and breakfast at the desert camp are included. Lunches, additional beverages and personal expenses are not included.
How do you reach the desert camp?
The planned experience includes a camel trek across Erg Chebbi around sunset, subject to arrival time and conditions. If you prefer not to take the camel ride, a 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead.
What are the cancellation policies?
Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the booking terms applicable to your reservation. Review Complete Morocco’s current cancellation policy before paying the deposit.
Is hotel pickup and drop-off included?
Yes. Pickup is from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, and the tour finishes at your hotel or riad in Fes. When accommodation is inside a pedestrian-only area, pickup or drop-off is arranged at the nearest vehicle-accessible point.
What accommodation types are used?
The tour includes one night in a private en-suite tent at a desert camp in Merzouga. Standard Comfort, Mid-Range and Premium camp categories are available, subject to availability for your travel dates.
Is there a group size limit?
This is a private tour rather than a fixed shared group departure. Transportation is matched to your group size, and availability for larger bookings is confirmed when you request the tour.
Can a solo traveler book this private tour?
Solo travelers can book the tour privately. The vehicle and driver-guide are dedicated to the booking, although the per-person rate is higher for one traveler because transportation costs are not shared.
How do I book this tour online?
Submit your travel dates, group size and preferred desert camp category through the booking form. We check transportation and camp availability and then confirm the final itinerary and price before you pay the required deposit.
Can I book this tour last-minute?
Last-minute bookings can be checked, but availability is not guaranteed. The vehicle and preferred desert camp must both be available, so booking earlier gives you more accommodation options.
Will we walk through Ait Ben Haddou or visit Todra Gorge?
This two-day itinerary includes a brief panoramic viewpoint at Ait Ben Haddou, not a walking visit through the ksar. Todra Gorge is not included, and there is no Dades Valley overnight. Choose the 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour if those experiences matter to you.
Is the sunset camel trek guaranteed?
The camel trek is planned around sunset, but reaching the dunes before sunset depends on the departure time, daylight hours, road conditions and progress during the day. We confirm the proposed schedule and camp-transfer arrangements for your dates before you book. If sunset is essential to your plans, consider the three-day itinerary, which divides the journey to Merzouga over two days.
Can I fly from Fes on the second evening?
The tour normally reaches Fes in the evening, and arrival can vary. We recommend staying in Fes that night and avoiding a tightly timed onward flight or train. Share your travel plans before booking.
Is there a full desert exploration day?
No. This itinerary has one overnight desert stop, with a planned camel trek and camp stay between two long drives. It does not include the full Merzouga 4×4 excursion. For time around Khamlia and the surrounding desert, compare the 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour.
