THE DIFFERENCE IS A DAY

A desert journey with time to enjoy being there

This private Marrakech to Fes desert tour connects two imperial cities through the High Atlas, Dades Valley and Erg Chebbi dunes. It is a journey through Morocco’s changing landscapes, with three very different overnight stays along the way.

The extra day belongs to Merzouga. Settle into a hotel or riad on your first desert evening, explore the region by 4×4 the next day, then ride into the dunes around sunset for your camp stay.

Traveling privately gives your group its own vehicle and driver-guide, with flexibility for reasonable sightseeing and comfort stops along the agreed route.

THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

Your 4-day Marrakech to Fes itinerary

This tour from Marrakech to Fes covers around 1,100 km over four days. The additional day in Merzouga is the main difference from the 3-day Marrakech to Fes route, giving you time to explore the Sahara before continuing north to Fes.

Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Skoura ⇢ Dades Valley

Your journey begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech before heading south into the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, revealing wide mountain valleys, isolated Amazigh settlements, and constantly changing scenery. Several well-chosen stops along the way give you time to enjoy the views and take photographs before descending toward the warmer, more arid landscapes beyond the mountains.

The main cultural stop of the day is Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar built from traditional earth and clay. Walk through its narrow passages and climb toward the upper part of the village for impressive views over the surrounding valley. Its distinctive earthen towers and passageways make this one of the most memorable stops on your journey. From here, continue to Ouarzazate, where you can optionally visit the Atlas Film Studios before travelling onward through the palm oasis of Skoura.

The afternoon drive continues through the Valley of Roses and into the Dades region, where cultivated fields, old kasbahs, rocky hillsides, and dramatic geological formations create a very different landscape from the morning’s mountain scenery. By late afternoon, arrive in the Dades Valley, check into your accommodation, and have time to unwind before dinner.

Overnight in Dades Valley.

Approx. driving distance: 320 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and breaks

Day 2: Dades Valley ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, travel east from the Dades Valley toward Tinghir, approaching a fertile oasis filled with date palms and small farming communities. Continue to Todra Gorge, where steep limestone walls rise dramatically on either side of the canyon. Take some time to walk through the gorge, enjoy the riverbed and mountain setting, and stretch your legs before continuing farther toward the Sahara.

Later, make your way to Rissani, a historic trading town that has long served the communities of Morocco’s southeast. If you are passing through on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, you can visit the town during one of its principal market days, when residents from the surrounding villages gather to trade food, spices, household goods, livestock, and locally produced items. After Rissani, the scenery becomes increasingly desert-like as you approach Merzouga and the impressive dunes of Erg Chebbi.

On arrival in Merzouga, check into your hotel or riad near the dunes and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at an easy pace. This first evening in the Sahara is intentionally kept relaxed, allowing you to settle in and enjoy the surroundings without rushing into activities after the drive. Your camel trek and luxury desert-camp experience are saved for the following afternoon, after a full day exploring the Merzouga area.

Overnight at a hotel or riad in Merzouga.

Approx. driving distance: 260 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the Rissani market visit when applicable, and breaks

Day 3: Merzouga Desert 4×4 Exploration ⇢ Sunset Camel Trek ⇢ Luxury Desert Camp

After breakfast, begin a private 4×4 exploration of the Merzouga region, following desert tracks around the Erg Chebbi dunes and discovering places that cannot be reached on the main paved roads. Visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical heritage, before continuing toward the old Mifis mining area and the broad, open desert landscapes beyond the main dune field.

The excursion also offers an opportunity to visit a nomadic family living in the desert surroundings, where you can share mint tea and gain an insight into a traditional way of life that remains closely connected to this environment. Depending on the season and water levels, your route may also include the seasonal lake near Merzouga. The day is flexible, with time for photographs, stops along the dunes, and a leisurely lunch before returning toward your accommodation later in the afternoon.

As the heat softens, meet your camel caravan and cross the Erg Chebbi dunes around sunset, watching the sand change color as the sun drops over the Sahara. Guests who prefer not to ride can reach the camp by 4×4 instead, while luggage is transferred separately. After arriving at your luxury desert camp, settle into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner, and spend the evening with traditional music around the fire beneath the open desert sky.

Overnight at a desert camp in Merzouga.

Approx. 4×4 distance: 50–80 km, depending on the route and stops

Approx. excursion time: 4–6 hours, with flexibility throughout the day

Day 4: Merzouga Desert ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Midelt ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Fes

If you wish, begin your final morning in the Sahara by watching the sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at the camp. Once you leave Merzouga, the journey turns north through the Tafilalet region toward the Ziz Valley, where a panoramic stop provides sweeping views over an extensive belt of date palms, traditional settlements, and the river cutting through the surrounding rocky terrain.

Continue toward Midelt, travelling through increasingly mountainous scenery as the desert landscapes gradually disappear behind you. After a lunch stop, enter the Middle Atlas region and head toward the cedar forests near Azrou, where Barbary macaques are frequently seen among the trees. From there, continue to Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town characterized by its cooler climate, landscaped streets, and alpine-influenced architecture.

The final stretch takes you from Ifrane toward Fes, passing through greener countryside as you approach the imperial city. Arrival is generally in the early evening, depending on traffic and the stops made during the day. Your driver will take you to your hotel or riad, or to the nearest point accessible by vehicle if your accommodation lies within the pedestrian-only lanes of the medina.

Drop-off at your accommodation in Fes.

Approx. driving distance: 470 km

Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and comfort breaks

Practical details before you travel

Expect one long final driving day. Merzouga to Fes is approximately 470 km. Stops around the Ziz Valley, Midelt, cedar forest and Ifrane break up the route, but you should still expect several hours in the vehicle.

Pack for changing temperatures. Conditions can be very different between Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Layers are particularly useful during winter, when mornings and nights around Merzouga can become cold.

The camel trek is optional. If camel riding is not suitable for you, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to the Sahara desert camp instead. Your luggage is transferred separately to camp.

The normal Merzouga arrangement is hotel first, camp second. Night 2 is at a Merzouga hotel or riad, while Night 3 is at the desert camp after your 4×4 exploration and camel trek.

Both Merzouga nights can be spent at the camp on request. Tell us before booking so we can check availability and confirm any change in price.

Arrival in Fes

Arrival is generally in the early evening and varies with traffic and stops. Plan an overnight stay in Fes rather than a tightly timed onward connection. Pickup and drop-off details are confirmed with your itinerary.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Questions about your desert tour

What is the itinerary for the 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour?

Day 1 travels from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura and Dades Valley. Day 2 continues through Tinghir and Todra Gorge to Merzouga, where you stay at a hotel or riad. Day 3 is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert by 4×4 before a sunset camel trek and overnight stay at the desert camp. Day 4 travels through the Ziz Valley, Midelt, cedar forest and Ifrane to Fes.

What is typically included in the 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour package?

The tour includes private transportation, an English-speaking driver-guide, three nights of accommodation, dinner and breakfast at each overnight stop, a private 4×4 Merzouga desert excursion, a sunset camel trek, desert camp accommodation, luggage transfer to camp, pickup in Marrakech and drop-off in Fes.

Are meals and accommodation included?

Yes. Three nights of accommodation are included, along with dinner and breakfast at each overnight stop. Lunches and additional beverages are not included.

How does the 4-day tour differ from the 3-day version?

The main difference is the extra day in Merzouga. The 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour reaches the Sahara on Day 2 and leaves for Fes the following morning. The 4-day tour gives you a full additional day to explore the desert area by 4×4 before the sunset camel trek and desert camp stay. The main transfer days remain long, including the final drive to Fes.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

Spring and autumn generally offer comfortable conditions. Winter can be cold at night in the Sahara and in the Atlas Mountains, while summer afternoons around Merzouga can be very hot. The tour can operate throughout the year, subject to road and weather conditions.

What transportation and vehicles are used?

Vehicle type is matched to the number of travelers. Groups of 2–3 generally travel by private 4×4, groups of 4–8 by minivan, and larger groups by minibus. Specific vehicle models depend on availability.

What is the typical group size?

There is no standard shared group size because this is a private tour. The trip is operated only for the travelers included in your booking.

What are the benefits of a private tour compared to a larger group tour?

A private tour provides your own vehicle and driver-guide, more flexibility for reasonable sightseeing and comfort stops, and no need to coordinate the day’s schedule with unrelated travelers.

How do you accommodate specific dietary needs?

Vegetarian and many other dietary requirements can generally be accommodated at the hotels and desert camps. Tell us about any dietary requirements before the tour so we can notify the accommodation providers.

What is the tipping etiquette for guides and drivers?

Tips are optional rather than compulsory. If you are happy with the service, you can tip your driver-guide directly at the end of the tour according to your own preference.

Is Wi-Fi or mobile signal available during the tour?

Mobile coverage is available across much of the route, but signal quality can vary in mountain and desert areas. Some hotels and desert camps provide Wi-Fi, but it should not be expected to have the same reliability as in Marrakech or Fes.

What are the luggage restrictions?

Normal travel luggage can be carried in the vehicle. Your luggage is transferred to the desert camp by 4×4, although taking a small overnight bag can be more convenient. If your group has unusually large or numerous suitcases, tell us beforehand so the appropriate vehicle can be arranged.

What can I do in Fes after the tour ends?

After you arrive in Fes, you can stay and explore the city or continue your Morocco trip north. We can arrange a guided Fes tour, a Chefchaouen day trip, or other onward services separately.
