Go beyond the camp night with a full Merzouga day

Day 3 is your full Sahara day. Head out by private 4×4 to Khamlia, the former Mifis mining area and a nomadic family visit, with the seasonal lake included when conditions allow. Later, take your camel trek toward camp, where a private en-suite tent, dinner and the desert evening await.

Your 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga itinerary
Follow the overnight order: Dades Valley, Merzouga hotel or riad, then desert camp. Transfer driving estimates exclude meals and visits; the Day 3 excursion duration includes its stops.
Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Skoura ⇢ Dades Valley
Your 4-day Marrakech desert tour begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad, followed by a spectacular drive into the High Atlas Mountains. Climb through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where winding roads reveal deep valleys, high peaks, and Amazigh villages built into the mountainsides. There will be several opportunities to pause at panoramic viewpoints before descending toward the warmer, earth-toned landscapes of southern Morocco.
Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar whose mud-brick towers and hillside setting have made it one of Morocco’s most recognizable landmarks. Take time to explore the old village on foot and climb through its narrow passageways for views across the surrounding valley. From here, continue to Ouarzazate, where an optional visit to Atlas Film Studios can be arranged at additional cost, time permitting, for guests interested in seeing sets and backdrops from Morocco’s film industry.
Leaving Ouarzazate, travel through the palm groves and old kasbahs of Skoura Oasis before following the road toward the Dades region. The afternoon scenery combines fertile valleys, ochre-colored villages, rugged mountains, and unusual rock formations as you approach the Dades Valley. Arrive at your hotel or riad in the late afternoon or early evening, with time to settle in and enjoy dinner after a rewarding first day.
Overnight: Dades Valley hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.
Approx. distance: 320–350 km
Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and breaks
Day 2: Dades Valley ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Erfoud ⇢ Merzouga Desert
After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel toward Tinghir, where one of southern Morocco’s largest palm oases spreads beneath the surrounding mountains. Continue into Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon carved between towering limestone cliffs. Enjoy time on foot inside the gorge, where the steep rock walls, riverbed, and small gardens create a refreshing contrast to the drier landscapes farther south.
From Todra, continue across the open plains and small desert towns of southeastern Morocco toward the Sahara. The scenery becomes progressively more arid as you approach the Tafilalet region, until the immense golden dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to appear on the horizon. Stops for lunch, photographs, and refreshments can be made along the way, with stops fitted to the day’s route.
Arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon and check into your hotel or riad near the dunes. Rather than immediately moving on to the desert camp, this evening is deliberately kept more relaxed, allowing you to enjoy the surroundings and rest after the journey. Your full desert exploration, camel experience, and camp night are reserved for the following day, giving you a dedicated day to explore beyond the camp.
Overnight: Merzouga hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.
Approx. distance: 260–275 km
Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours excluding Todra Gorge, lunch, sightseeing stops, and breaks
Day 3: Merzouga Desert 4×4 Exploration ⇢ Khamlia ⇢ Nomadic Family ⇢ Sunset Camel Trek ⇢ Desert Camp
After breakfast, set off by private 4×4 to explore the landscapes surrounding the Erg Chebbi dunes. Leave the paved roads behind and follow desert tracks toward Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical traditions, before continuing through the black-desert terrain around the former Mifis mining area. The route gives you a broader perspective of the Sahara beyond the main dune field and tourist areas.
Subject to local availability, continue farther into the desert to spend time with a nomadic family, where you can share traditional mint tea and learn about life in this remote environment. Depending on seasonal conditions, the excursion may also include the lake near Merzouga, along with quieter viewpoints around the dunes. The schedule remains flexible throughout the day, allowing time for photographs, conversations, short walks, and a relaxed lunch rather than rushing from one stop to another.
Later in the afternoon, return to the edge of Erg Chebbi and meet your camel caravan for a journey across the dunes planned around sunset and adjusted to conditions. Guests who prefer not to ride can reach the camp by 4×4, while luggage is transferred separately. After arriving at your desert camp, settle into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner, and spend the evening around the fire with traditional music beneath the open Sahara sky.
Overnight: Merzouga desert camp. Private en-suite tent, dinner and breakfast included.
Approx. 4×4 distance: 50–80 km, depending on the route and stops
Approx. excursion time: 4–6 hours including visits and stops; this is not continuous driving
Day 4: Merzouga ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Nkob ⇢ Draa Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Marrakech
If timing and conditions allow, begin the morning with sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast at camp. After leaving Merzouga, travel toward Rissani, an old commercial center with deep connections to the caravan trade of the Tafilalet region. When this day falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, a brief stop may be possible, if timing allows, to experience Rissani on one of its traditional souk days, when merchants and residents from surrounding desert communities fill the market with produce, spices, livestock, household goods, and regional products.
From Rissani, take the scenic southern route toward Nkob, crossing broad desert plains and striking Anti-Atlas landscapes before reaching the Draa Valley. Around Agdez, thousands of date palms stretch along the river beneath rocky mountains and traditional villages, creating one of the most distinctive oasis landscapes in southern Morocco. The route then climbs through the mountains toward Ouarzazate, adding a different southern section before rejoining the High Atlas crossing used on Day 1.
After passing Ouarzazate, continue toward the High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass on the final journey back to Marrakech. Brief panoramic stops can be made along the mountain road when time and daylight allow before descending toward the Marrakech plains. Arrival is expected in the evening and may be late, with drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point in the medina.
Finish: Marrakech accommodation or an agreed accessible drop-off point. Accommodation tonight is not included.
Approx. distance: 560–590 km
Approx. driving time: 9–10 hours excluding the Rissani market visit when applicable, lunch, scenic stops, and comfort breaks

Practical details before you travel
Day 4 is the longest. Allow approximately 6–7 hours of driving on Day 1, 4–5 on Day 2 and 9–10 on Day 4. Meals, visits and comfort breaks are additional to those transfer times. The Day 3 local 4×4 excursion takes around 4–6 hours including its visits and stops.
Plan around four full days. Stay in Marrakech before departure and avoid a tightly timed flight or train on return evening. Provide any fixed onward travel details before booking.
Dress for mountains and dunes. Bring comfortable walking shoes, layers, sun protection and a small overnight bag. Winter desert nights can be cold; summer afternoons can be very hot.
Your camp transfer can suit your preferences. A 4×4 transfer can replace the camel trek. Luggage transfer to and from camp is included; confirm transfer arrangements before departure.
Separate sightseeing from admission costs. Time to explore Ait Ben Haddou is included in the itinerary, while monument entrance fees and local guides are separate. Atlas Studios is optional, time permitting, and costs extra.
Keep optional activities realistic. Quad biking and dune buggies cost extra and need available time. Your private Merzouga 4×4 excursion is included; quad and buggy activities are separate.
Private travel with a realistic schedule
Your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your group, allowing reasonable comfort and photo stops. The distances still shape the day. The full Merzouga day adds time to explore the desert, while the return remains a long transfer. Family visits depend on local availability and the lake is seasonal; ask before photographing people.

Day 1 travels from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura and Dades Valley. Day 2 continues through Tinghir, Todra Gorge and Erfoud to Merzouga, where you stay at a hotel or riad for a relaxed first evening. Day 3 explores the Merzouga desert by 4×4, including Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a nomad family living in traditional tents and the seasonal lake when conditions allow, followed by a sunset camel trek and an overnight stay at the desert camp. Day 4 returns to Marrakech through Rissani, Nkob, the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate.
How much does the 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour cost?
Indicative private rates range from €349 to €1,138 per person depending on group size. For two travelers, the indicative rate is €569 per person. Travel dates, accommodation category and availability can affect the final confirmed price.
What is typically included in the 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga package?
The tour includes private transportation, an English-speaking driver-guide, three nights of accommodation, dinner and breakfast at each overnight property, a sunset camel trek, a private 4×4 Merzouga desert excursion, luggage transfer to the desert camp, sandboards, and pickup and drop-off in Marrakech.
How is this different from the 3-day Marrakech desert tour?
The 4-day tour adds a full extra day in Merzouga for a private 4×4 desert excursion and a second night around the Sahara. The 3-day Marrakech desert tour includes one Merzouga night and leaves for Marrakech the following morning, making it better suited to travelers with less time.
What type of accommodation is included?
The order is Night 1 in Dades Valley, Night 2 at a Merzouga hotel or riad and Night 3 at the desert camp. Rooms and tents are private and en-suite. Standard Comfort, Mid-Range and Premium categories are available, subject to availability.
What are the must-see stops on this itinerary?
Major stops include Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Erfoud, Merzouga, the Erg Chebbi dunes, Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a nomad family visit, the seasonal lake when conditions allow, Rissani, Nkob and the Draa Valley.
What vehicles are used for transportation?
Vehicle type is matched to group size. Smaller groups generally use a private 4×4, medium-sized groups travel by minivan, and larger bookings use a minibus. The Merzouga desert exploration itself is carried out by 4×4.
Is it possible to customize the itinerary?
Some adjustments are possible because this is a private tour, provided they remain realistic within the route and driving distances. One available change is spending both Merzouga nights at the desert camp by replacing Night 2’s hotel or riad; Night 3 is already at camp. Availability, arrangements and any price difference are confirmed before booking.
Private tour vs. group tour, what’s the difference?
A private tour is reserved for your booking and includes your own vehicle and driver-guide. A group tour combines travelers from separate bookings and generally follows a more fixed schedule.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
Spring and autumn generally provide comfortable conditions. Winter can bring cold desert nights and cooler mountain weather, while summer afternoons in Merzouga can be very hot. The tour can operate throughout the year, subject to road and weather conditions.
What should I pack for the trip?
Bring comfortable clothing, layers for cooler mornings and evenings, sun protection, walking shoes and any personal medication. A smaller overnight bag can be useful for the desert camp even though your main luggage is transferred for you.
What activities are included along the route?
Included experiences cover the sunset camel trek, the overnight desert camp stay, sandboarding, and a private Merzouga 4×4 excursion including Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a nomad family visit and the seasonal lake when conditions allow, plus the sightseeing stops described in the itinerary.
Is travel insurance included?
No. Travel insurance is not included in the tour price and should be arranged separately if required.
How early should I book?
Booking earlier gives you a better choice of accommodation, particularly for preferred desert camps and during busy travel periods. Last-minute requests can still be checked, but specific properties cannot be guaranteed until availability is confirmed.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the booking terms. Please refer to Complete Morocco’s cancellation policy before paying your deposit.
What are common tipping practices for guides and drivers?
Tips are optional. If you are satisfied with your driver-guide’s service, you may tip directly at the end of the tour according to your preference.
Are there options for solo travelers?
Yes. Solo travelers can book the tour privately. Because the vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for one booking, the per-person price is higher for a solo traveler than for a larger group.
What dietary accommodations can be arranged?
Vegetarian and many common dietary requirements can usually be accommodated. Tell us about dietary needs before the tour so the Dades accommodation, desert camp and Merzouga hotel or riad can prepare accordingly.
How is luggage handled during the journey?
Your luggage travels in the tour vehicle. For the desert camp night, luggage can be transferred separately by 4×4, so you do not need to carry it on the camel. A smaller overnight bag can make the camp stay easier.
What payment methods are accepted?
After availability and the final price are confirmed, the required deposit can be arranged using the payment methods offered with your booking, including PayPal, bank transfer, or Wise.
How do I book this tour online?
Send your dates, group size and preferred accommodation category through the booking form. We will check transportation, Dades Valley accommodation and both Merzouga nights before confirming the itinerary and price. Once you approve the details, the required deposit secures the booking.
How long are the driving days?
Day 1 is approximately 320–350 km and 6–7 driving hours; Day 2 is 260–275 km and 4–5 hours; Day 4 is 560–590 km and 9–10 hours. Visits, meals and breaks are additional. Day 3 is a local excursion of around 50–80 km over 4–6 hours including stops.
What does the lowest price apply to?
The €349 per-person rate applies to a private group of 10 or more. The €569 rate is per person for two travelers. The bands refer to your own party, not shared seats. Dates, accommodation and room arrangements determine the confirmed quote; the table does not guarantee every category at the same rate.
Can I fly out of Marrakech on the final evening?
Avoid a tightly timed flight or train connection. Arrival depends on traffic, weather and stops and may be late. Plan to stay in Marrakech that night and share fixed onward travel plans before booking.
Are monument guides and Atlas Studios included?
The itinerary allows time at Ait Ben Haddou, but local monument guides and entrance fees are separate. Atlas Studios is an optional visit at additional cost, time permitting.
Is the whole camp private to our group?
Your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking, and your tent is private. The camp and hotels can host other guests.
