Reach Erg Chebbi and return to Marrakech in two days
This private Marrakech desert tour takes you to Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi dunes for one Sahara camp night, with pickup and return in Marrakech. It is designed for travelers who specifically want this dune landscape and have only two full days available.
Your outward journey crosses the High Atlas and follows the southern route through Ouarzazate, Agdez and Nkob. At Merzouga, a camel trek planned around sunset leads into your overnight experience, with dinner, breakfast and a private en-suite tent. A 4×4 camp transfer is available if you prefer not to ride.
The return route includes a short Todra Gorge stop and an Ait Ben Haddou panoramic viewpoint. Both days are dominated by travel, so choose this itinerary for the desert overnight and scenic journey. If you can add a day, compare the 3-day Marrakech desert tour for more sightseeing time.

Your 2-day Marrakech to Merzouga itinerary
The outward route goes through Agdez and Nkob; the return includes Todra Gorge and an Ait Ben Haddou viewpoint. Driving estimates exclude meals, sightseeing and comfort breaks. Your departure and camp-transfer arrangements are confirmed before travel.
Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Agdez ⇢ Nkob ⇢ Merzouga Desert
Your 2-day desert tour from Marrakech begins with an early pickup from your hotel or riad, allowing you to make the most of the long journey toward the Sahara. Climb through the High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with brief stops at carefully chosen viewpoints overlooking mountain valleys and Amazigh villages. After descending toward Ouarzazate, continue south toward Agdez rather than adding lengthy sightseeing stops, keeping the day focused on reaching Merzouga.
From Agdez, follow a scenic southern route through the landscapes of the Draa region toward Nkob, Tazzarine, and Alnif. This less urban stretch reveals a striking side of Morocco, with rocky plateaus, acacia-dotted plains, palm-filled settlements, and distant mountain ranges accompanying much of the drive. There will be time for lunch and comfort breaks along the way before continuing through the Tafilalet region toward the edge of the Sahara.
Toward the end of the drive, the dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to appear as you approach Merzouga. Meet your camel caravan and ride into the dunes, with the trek planned around sunset and adjusted to arrival time, daylight and conditions, with time to pause and enjoy the changing colors of the sand before continuing to your desert camp. Guests who prefer not to ride can reach the camp by 4×4 instead. Your luggage is transferred separately to camp. After settling into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner and an evening of traditional music around the campfire beneath the Sahara sky.
Overnight: Merzouga desert camp. Private en-suite tent, dinner and breakfast included.
Approx. distance: 560 km
Approx. driving time: 9–10 hours excluding lunch, scenic stops, and comfort breaks
Day 2: Merzouga ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou Panoramic Viewpoint ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Marrakech
If timing and conditions allow, wake early to experience sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at the camp. Return from camp by the agreed camel ride or 4×4 transfer, then leave Merzouga early and travel west through Rissani, an important historic trading town of the Tafilalet region. If your journey falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, a brief stop may be possible, only if timing allows, during one of Rissani’s traditional market days, when traders and families from surrounding communities gather in town. Continue afterward toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge, where there is time for a short walk beneath the impressive limestone walls before resuming the journey.
The route then carries you west through the varied landscapes of southern Morocco toward Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. Because this is already a particularly long return journey to Marrakech, the visit here is intentionally limited to a panoramic viewpoint rather than a full walking tour of the ksar. From across the valley, you can photograph the UNESCO-listed fortified village and appreciate the earthen architecture of the ksar against the surrounding valley.
From Ait Ben Haddou, continue into the High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass once more, with brief scenic stops when time and daylight allow. The mountain road gradually descends toward the Marrakech plains, bringing you back to the city in the evening, potentially late depending on traffic, road conditions and stops. Your driver will drop you at your hotel, riad, or the closest vehicle-accessible point if your accommodation is located inside the pedestrian section of the medina.
Finish: Your Marrakech accommodation or an agreed accessible drop-off point. Accommodation on return night is not included.
Approx. distance: 570 km
Approx. driving time: 10–11 hours excluding Todra Gorge, the panoramic Ait Ben Haddou stop, lunch, and comfort breaks

Practical details before you travel
Allow two full travel days. Day 1 is approximately 560 km and 9–10 hours of driving. Day 2 is approximately 570 km and 10–11 hours of driving. Stops are additional; the second day can finish late.
Stay in Marrakech the night before. An early departure helps protect time for the camp arrival. If you are considering same-day airport pickup, send flight details before booking so feasibility can be checked.
Sunset timing varies. The camel trek is planned around sunset, but departure timing, daylight, weather and road conditions affect the arrangements. The return transfer from camp is agreed around Day 2’s early start.
Pack for the dunes and mountains. Bring layers, comfortable shoes, sun protection and a small overnight bag. Your main luggage can be transferred separately to camp.
Keep additions realistic. Quad biking and dune buggies cost extra and require advance confirmation of available time. This route does not include a full Merzouga 4×4 exploration day or a walking visit inside Ait Ben Haddou.
Meals and personal expenses. One dinner and one breakfast at camp are included. Budget separately for lunches, additional beverages, entrance fees where applicable and personal spending.
Plan to stay in Marrakech on arrival night
Do not rely on a fixed arrival time for an evening flight or train. Tell us about onward travel before confirming. If the driving feels too compressed, the three-day route allows an additional overnight stay and more time along the route.
Questions about your two-day desert journey
Can I visit Merzouga and return to Marrakech in two days?
It is a compact itinerary for travelers comfortable with two long driving days. You get one camp night and brief sightseeing stops, with around 9–10 hours of driving on Day 1 and 10–11 on Day 2 before breaks. Choose three days if you want more time for visits and an extra overnight stop.
How much does the private two-day tour cost?
Indicative rates are €377 per person for two travelers, €748 for one traveler and €150 per person for a private group of 10 or more. The table lists all eight group-size rates. Your dates, selected camp and availability determine the final quote; the lowest rate does not apply to every group size or camp category.
Is this a private or shared tour?
This is a private tour. The vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking, and the price bands refer to the travelers in your own party. Your tent is private; the camp itself can host other guests.
Where do we stay on the first night?
At a Merzouga desert camp in a private en-suite tent, with dinner and breakfast included. There is no hotel night in the standard itinerary. Choose Standard Comfort, Mid-Range or Premium and confirm your camp in the quote.
How long are the driving days?
Day 1 is approximately 9–10 hours of driving over 560 km. Day 2 is approximately 10–11 hours over 570 km on the planned route. Sightseeing, meals, camp transfers and comfort breaks add time. Traffic and road conditions can affect these estimates.
Do we walk inside Ait Ben Haddou?
No. This two-day itinerary includes a brief panoramic viewpoint stop. A walking visit inside the ksar is not included. The 3-day tour provides more time for that visit.
Is Todra Gorge included?
The planned Day 2 route includes a short Todra Gorge stop for a brief walk and photographs. This is not a long hike. Your driver adjusts the day to road conditions and timing.
Can I skip the camel ride?
Yes. A 4×4 transfer to camp is included as the alternative. Tell us before departure. The return camel ride or 4×4 transfer is agreed around the early start on Day 2.
Are sunset and sunrise guaranteed?
The camel trek is planned around sunset, and sunrise may be possible before breakfast and departure. Weather, daylight and arrival timing affect what you see, so neither view is guaranteed.
Are meals and activities included?
Dinner, breakfast, the camel trek or alternative camp transfer, luggage transfers and available camp sandboards are included. Lunches, additional drinks, monument entrance fees and local guides are separate. Quad biking and dune buggies are optional paid extras, subject to available time.
Where do pickup and drop-off take place?
Pickup is from your Marrakech accommodation or an agreed vehicle-accessible point nearby. Drop-off is at your Marrakech accommodation or the nearest accessible point. The exact pickup time is confirmed before departure.
What vehicle will we use?
Private air-conditioned transport is matched to group size: 4×4, minivan or minibus. Your quote confirms the arrangements. An English-speaking driver-guide accompanies the trip; other languages are on request and subject to availability.
Is this suitable for children or travelers with mobility needs?
Discuss children’s ages, seating requirements and mobility needs before booking. The long drives, uneven ground and camp access need consideration. A camp transfer can replace the camel ride, but that does not make every part of the route accessible. A longer itinerary may suit your group better.
Can dietary requirements and luggage be accommodated?
Tell us about dietary needs so we can check with the camp. Your luggage travels in the vehicle and can be transferred separately to camp; a small overnight bag is useful. Tell us about unusually large luggage when requesting your quote.
Can I fly out of Marrakech on the final evening?
Avoid a tightly timed flight or train connection. Arrival may be late and depends on traffic, road conditions and stops. Plan to stay in Marrakech that night and share fixed onward travel plans before booking.
How do booking, payment and cancellation work?
Send your dates, group size and preferred camp. Review the confirmed itinerary, accommodation, total price and deposit terms before paying. Payments can be arranged by PayPal, bank transfer or Wise. Read our cancellation policy before confirming.
Which desert does this tour visit?
The destination is Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Both pickup and return are in Marrakech. Check the named desert when comparing two-day offers, because itineraries with similar titles can visit different destinations.
Does this include a full Merzouga 4×4 excursion?
No. Your desert time is the arrival evening and overnight, followed by an early departure. The 4×4 camp-transfer alternative is not a full excursion around Khamlia, Mifis or the surrounding desert. Ask for a longer itinerary if those visits are a priority.
Will we visit Rissani market?
A brief market stop may be possible when Day 2 falls on Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday and the schedule allows. It is not guaranteed on this long return day.
When should I travel and what should I pack?
Spring and autumn generally offer moderate conditions. Summer can be very hot around Merzouga and winter nights can be cold. Bring comfortable shoes, layers, sun protection and an overnight bag. Weather and road conditions can affect the route.
