THE EXTRA DAY CHANGES THE RETURN

A full Sahara day, with the return journey spread over two days

This private 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour starts and finishes in Marrakech. Your four nights follow a clear sequence: Dades Valley, a Merzouga hotel or riad, a Merzouga desert camp, then Skoura Oasis.

Travel through the High Atlas and Ait Ben Haddou before an evening in Dades. The next day, walk beneath the cliffs of Todra Gorge and arrive near Erg Chebbi with time to settle into your hotel. Day 3 belongs to the desert: explore by private 4×4, visit Khamlia and the surrounding landscapes, then take your camel trek toward camp around sunset.

The fifth day changes the return. Instead of the four-day tour’s single long transfer from Merzouga to Marrakech, stay in Skoura and continue through the Ounila Valley the following day. Parts of the main road overlap with the outward journey, while the oasis overnight and valley detour bring a different rhythm to the trip.

THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

Your 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga itinerary

Follow the overnight order: Dades, Merzouga hotel, desert camp and Skoura. Road-driving estimates exclude visits, meals and breaks; the Day 3 excursion duration includes its stops. Arrival times depend on conditions and the day’s activities.

Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Dades Valley

Your 5-day Marrakech desert tour begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad before leaving the city for the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, twisting through deep valleys and mountainside Amazigh villages along the way. Stops at selected viewpoints give you time to appreciate the dramatic elevation changes and photograph the mountain scenery before crossing into the drier landscapes of southern Morocco.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar whose earthen towers and fortified homes rise above the Ounila River. Explore the old village on foot, wandering through its narrow lanes and climbing toward the upper levels for views over the valley. From here, continue to Ouarzazate, where an optional visit to Atlas Film Studios can be arranged at additional cost, time permitting, for travelers interested in Morocco’s filmmaking history.

In the afternoon, leave Ouarzazate and follow the road east through kasbah country toward the Dades Valley. The landscape develops into a mixture of ochre cliffs, cultivated fields, traditional villages, and striking rock formations as you approach the valley. Arrive at your hotel or riad in the late afternoon or early evening, with time to settle in and enjoy dinner.

Night 1: Dades Valley hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 320–350 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and breaks

Day 2: Dades Valley ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Erfoud ⇢ Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, travel through the Dades region toward Tinghir, where one of southern Morocco’s largest palm oases spreads across the valley floor. Continue into Todra Gorge, where towering limestone walls narrow around the riverbed. You will have time to walk inside the canyon, enjoy the cooler air beneath the cliffs, and take photographs before continuing toward the Sahara.

The road then carries you east through increasingly arid scenery toward Erfoud, a town well known for the fossil-rich stone found throughout the surrounding region. From here, continue across the Tafilalet landscape toward Merzouga, where the flat desert gives way to the immense golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Stops for lunch and refreshments can be made along the route without rushing the journey.

Arrive in Merzouga later in the afternoon and check into your hotel or riad near the dunes. This first evening is deliberately kept relaxed, allowing you to enjoy your introduction to the Sahara and rest after the journey. Your camel trek and desert-camp experience are reserved for the following day, when you will have much more time to explore the Merzouga area properly.

Night 2: Merzouga hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 260–275 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours excluding Todra Gorge, lunch, sightseeing stops, and breaks

Day 3: Merzouga Desert 4×4 Exploration ⇢ Khamlia ⇢ Nomadic Family ⇢ Sunset Camel Trek ⇢ Desert Camp

After breakfast, set out in a private 4×4 for an immersive exploration of the landscapes surrounding Erg Chebbi. Follow desert tracks toward Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical heritage, before continuing toward the Mifis mining area and the wide black-desert plains beyond the main dune field. This circuit reveals a side of Merzouga that extends far beyond the familiar sand dunes.

Subject to local availability, continue deeper into the surrounding desert for the opportunity to visit a nomadic family, share mint tea, and learn about everyday life in this remote environment. Depending on seasonal conditions, the route may also include the lake near Merzouga and quieter viewpoints around Erg Chebbi. The excursion remains flexible, giving you time for photographs, short walks, conversations, and a leisurely lunch rather than following a rigid schedule.

Later in the afternoon, return to the edge of the dunes and meet your camel caravan for a trek across Erg Chebbi planned around sunset and adjusted to conditions. If you prefer not to ride, transportation to the camp by 4×4 can be arranged, while luggage is transferred separately. Settle into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner, and spend the evening with traditional music around the campfire beneath the Sahara sky.

Night 3: Merzouga desert camp, private en-suite tent. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. 4×4 distance: 50–80 km, depending on the route and stops

Approx. excursion time: 4–6 hours including visits and stops; this is not continuous driving

Day 4: Merzouga Desert ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Rose Valley ⇢ Amridil Kasbah ⇢ Skoura Oasis

If timing and conditions allow, begin the morning with sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast at camp. After leaving Merzouga, travel toward Rissani, one of the historic commercial centers of the Tafilalet region. If your journey falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, a stop may be possible, if timing allows, during one of Rissani’s traditional market days, when residents from surrounding desert communities come into town to trade food, spices, household goods, livestock, and regional products.

Continue west through the changing landscapes toward Tinghir and then onward through the valleys of southern Morocco toward the Rose Valley. Small villages, cultivated fields, kasbahs, and stretches of rose farming line this part of the route, particularly around the Kelaat M’Gouna region. During the spring rose season the valley becomes especially lively, although its rural scenery and traditional settlements make it an attractive drive throughout the year.

Later in the afternoon, continue to Skoura Oasis for a visit to Kasbah Amridil, one of the region’s best-preserved historic kasbahs, subject to opening hours. Entrance fees are separate. Explore its courtyards, towers, living spaces, and traditional agricultural areas before heading to your accommodation among the palm groves of Skoura. The evening is yours to relax in the quieter oasis setting after a varied day crossing the south.

Night 4: Skoura Oasis hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 360–390 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the Rissani market visit when applicable, and breaks

Day 5: Skoura ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ounila Valley ⇢ Telouet Kasbah ⇢ High Atlas ⇢ Marrakech

After breakfast, leave the palm groves of Skoura and travel toward Ouarzazate before turning onto one of the most scenic routes back toward the High Atlas. Rather than simply retracing the main road, continue through the Ounila Valley, where red-earth villages, cultivated terraces, old kasbahs, and rugged mountain scenery create one of the most rewarding drives in this part of Morocco.

Follow the valley toward Telouet, once an important stronghold along the caravan route linking the Sahara with Marrakech. A visit to Telouet Kasbah is possible only when the site is open and accessible; admission, where applicable, is separate. Your driver will confirm access on the day. If entry is unavailable, continue through the valley toward the High Atlas, enjoying the village and mountain scenery along the route.

From Telouet, climb back toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and cross the High Atlas Mountains for the final journey to Marrakech. Brief stops can be made at mountain viewpoints before the road descends toward the plains surrounding the city. Arrival is expected in the late afternoon or evening, with drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point in the medina.

Finish: Marrakech hotel, riad or nearest vehicle-accessible point. Accommodation tonight is not included.

Approx. distance: 250–270 km

Approx. driving time: 5–6 hours excluding the Telouet visit, lunch, scenic stops, and comfort breaks
