Your journey begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Fes, leaving the imperial city behind as you climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, a quiet mountain town known for its alpine-style architecture and cool climate, followed by the cedar forests near Azrou. Here, you can pause among the towering cedar trees and may encounter Barbary macaques before continuing across the high plateaus of central Morocco.

The scenery changes continuously as you travel south toward Midelt, where there is time for lunch before continuing through mountain passes and wide-open landscapes. As the road descends toward the Tafilalet region, stop above the Ziz Valley for a panoramic view over its long ribbon of date palms, traditional villages, and cultivated plots stretching between the surrounding cliffs.

Toward the end of the day, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to appear on the horizon as you approach Merzouga. Rather than rushing directly into desert activities after the long drive, settle into your hotel or riad near the dunes and enjoy the evening at a comfortable pace. This first night gives you time to rest before dedicating the following day entirely to exploring the Sahara.

After breakfast, set out on a private 4×4 adventure around Erg Chebbi, leaving the paved roads behind to explore the landscapes and communities around the dunes. Follow desert tracks around the dunes toward Khamlia, a small village with a strong Gnawa musical heritage, where you can experience traditional music before continuing across the black-desert landscapes and toward the former Mifis mining area.

Farther into the desert, visit a nomadic family living away from the main villages and share mint tea while learning about everyday life in this remote environment. Depending on seasonal conditions, the route may also pass the temporary lake near Merzouga, along with panoramic points overlooking different sides of the dunes. The excursion is intentionally flexible, allowing time for photographs, conversations, and a relaxed lunch rather than following a rushed schedule.

Later in the afternoon, return to the edge of Erg Chebbi and meet your camel caravan for the journey into the dunes around sunset. If you prefer not to ride, transportation to the camp by 4×4 can be arranged, while your luggage is transferred separately. Settle into your private en-suite tent at the desert camp, enjoy dinner, and finish the evening with traditional music around the fire beneath the Sahara sky.

Start the morning with the option to watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at camp. After leaving the dunes, travel to Rissani, one of the historic commercial centers of the Tafilalet region and once an important meeting point for Saharan caravan routes. If this day falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, you can visit Rissani when its traditional souk is in full swing, bringing together merchants and families from communities across the surrounding desert region.

Continue west toward Tinghir, where the dry plateau suddenly gives way to a broad green oasis filled with palms, gardens, and traditional villages. From here, enter Todra Gorge and enjoy a walk beneath the enormous limestone walls that narrow around the canyon. There is time to appreciate the scale of the gorge, take photographs, and enjoy lunch in the area before continuing deeper into the southern valleys.

The afternoon journey leads toward the Dades Valley, passing Amazigh settlements, cultivated terraces, rugged mountains, and some of the region’s most unusual rock formations. Scenic stops can be made as you enter the valley, including viewpoints over its winding roads and dramatic geology, before arriving at your hotel or riad for a relaxed evening.

The off-road route depends on road conditions; vehicle arrangements are confirmed with your quote. Today takes you away from the main tourist road for a more intimate look at life between the Dades and Rose valleys. After breakfast, follow the route toward Boutaghrar, where an off-road track leads through an isolated landscape of ochre mountains, dry riverbeds, cultivated pockets, and small Amazigh communities. This slower route reveals a very different side of southern Morocco from the major highways used on the previous days.

Along the way, stop to meet a local nomadic family living in the countryside around Boutaghrar. The visit offers a chance to share tea, see their surroundings, and gain a more personal understanding of how families have adapted to life in this rugged region. Continue afterward through the Rose Valley, where villages, fields, and rose cultivation line the valley floor; during the spring blooming season, the area becomes especially colorful and fragrant.

Later, make your way toward Skoura Oasis and visit Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved historic kasbahs in the region. Entrance fees are paid separately. Explore its traditional architecture, courtyards, rooms, and agricultural spaces before continuing through Skoura’s vast palm grove. The day ends in the oasis, giving you a peaceful evening surrounded by palms and old earthen kasbahs rather than another long-distance drive.

After breakfast, leave the tranquillity of Skoura and make the short journey toward Ouarzazate, Morocco’s best-known filmmaking center. If you are interested in cinema, an optional visit to Atlas Studios can be arranged at additional cost to explore film sets and backdrops created for international productions. From Ouarzazate, continue through the desert foothills toward one of southern Morocco’s most celebrated historic sites.

Arrive at Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar rising above the Ounila Valley. Take time to explore its maze of earthen lanes, towers, and fortified houses on foot, with rewarding views from the upper part of the village. From the upper lanes, pause to take in the contrast between the earthen buildings and the surrounding valley.

After your visit, begin the final crossing of the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The road winds through high valleys and mountain villages, with scenic stops along the way before descending toward the plains surrounding Marrakech. Arrive in the city in the late afternoon or evening, where your driver will drop you at your hotel, riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point.
