Explore the desert before continuing to Marrakech
This private 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour gives you two different nights around Merzouga: a hotel or lodge on arrival, followed by a desert camp after your day of exploration. The first evening is a chance to settle in after the long journey through the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley.
On Day 2, head into the desert by 4×4, visit Khamlia and explore the landscapes around Erg Chebbi. There is time for local encounters and stops before your sunset camel trek to camp. If you prefer, a 4×4 can take you to camp instead.
Your journey then continues through Rissani and Todra Gorge to a third overnight stay in the Dades Valley. On the final day, discover Ait Ben Haddou and cross the High Atlas to Marrakech. Your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking throughout.

What does the fourth day add?
The difference is a dedicated day around Merzouga and an additional overnight stay. The long transfer days remain part of the journey, so choose four days for more desert time rather than shorter daily road distances.

Your 4-day Fes to Marrakech itinerary
This 4 days desert tour from Fes includes two nights around Merzouga before continuing toward Marrakech. The itinerary balances the long journey across Morocco with a full day in the desert, followed by an overnight stay in Dades Valley before the final drive to Marrakech.
Day 1: Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Midelt ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga
Your journey begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Fes, heading south toward the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane, known for its tidy streets, alpine-inspired architecture, and cooler mountain climate, before continuing toward the cedar forests near Azrou. Here, there is often a chance to see Barbary macaques in their natural surroundings before the road carries you deeper into the mountains.
Continue through the changing scenery toward Midelt, where you can stop for lunch before crossing a series of high plateaus and mountain passes. As the route descends toward southern Morocco, the landscape becomes noticeably drier and more dramatic, eventually reaching the Ziz Valley. A panoramic stop along the way offers sweeping views over the palm-filled oasis, scattered villages, and the river winding through the valley below.
Toward the end of the day, arrive in Merzouga, where the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi dominate the horizon. Check into your hotel or riad near the dunes and enjoy the evening at a relaxed pace, giving you time to settle in before the following day’s full desert experience.
Overnight at a hotel or riad in Merzouga.
Approx. driving distance: 470 km
Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and comfort breaks
Day 2: Merzouga Desert 4×4 Exploration ⇢ Sunset Camel Trek ⇢ Luxury Desert Camp
After breakfast, begin a private 4×4 exploration around the Erg Chebbi dunes, travelling along desert tracks to discover the landscapes and communities surrounding Merzouga. Visit Khamlia village, where you can experience traditional Gnawa music, then continue toward the Mifis mining area and other quieter sections of the desert away from the main road.
The excursion can also include a visit with a nomadic family, giving you the opportunity to share mint tea and learn more about daily life in the Sahara. Depending on the season and local conditions, you may also stop near the seasonal lake outside Merzouga. The day remains flexible, with time for photographs, short walks, and a relaxed lunch before returning toward the dunes later in the afternoon.
With timing planned around sunset and local conditions, meet your camel caravan and ride across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi toward your desert camp. A 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead for anyone who prefers not to ride, while luggage is transported separately. After settling into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner followed by traditional music around the campfire beneath the Sahara sky.
Overnight at a desert camp in Merzouga.
Approx. 4×4 distance: 50–80 km, depending on the route and stops
Approx. excursion time: 4–6 hours for the excursion including local visits and stops; this is not continuous driving
Day 3: Merzouga Desert ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Dades Valley
Wake early if you would like to see the first light of the day spread across the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast at camp. After leaving Merzouga, travel toward Rissani, a historic town that once played an important role in the caravan trade of southeastern Morocco. If your visit falls on Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, you can experience one of the town’s main market days, when residents from surrounding villages arrive to trade produce, spices, livestock, household goods, and other everyday items.
From Rissani, continue west toward Tinghir, where a broad palm oasis creates a striking contrast with the surrounding rocky terrain. A short distance beyond the town lies Todra Gorge, where high limestone cliffs close in around the canyon. You will have time to walk through the gorge, enjoy the cooler setting beside the riverbed, and take photographs before continuing along the road toward Dades.
The final part of the day leads through fertile valleys, small Amazigh communities, and rugged mountain scenery before reaching the Dades Valley. Depending on the pace of the day, you can pause at viewpoints overlooking some of the area’s distinctive rock formations before arriving at your accommodation for a relaxed evening.
Overnight in Dades Valley.
Approx. driving distance: 275 km
Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the Rissani market visit when applicable, and breaks
Day 4: Dades Valley ⇢ Skoura ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Marrakech
After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel through the southern Moroccan countryside toward Skoura, an oasis known for its palm groves and old kasbahs. Continue to Ouarzazate, where film enthusiasts can choose an optional visit to Atlas Film Studios, home to sets and production spaces used for numerous international movies and television projects.
From Ouarzazate, continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar whose earthen towers and fortified lanes have made it one of Morocco’s most recognizable filming locations. You will have time to explore the village on foot and take in the views from its higher levels. The earthen passageways and valley views make this a memorable final cultural stop before the mountain crossing.
After the visit, begin the final journey across the High Atlas Mountains, following the winding road through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Enjoy several scenic stops as the road climbs through mountain villages and dramatic valleys before descending toward Marrakech. Arrival is generally in the evening, with drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point.
Drop-off at your accommodation in Marrakech.
Approx. driving distance: 350 km
Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and comfort breaks

Practical details before you travel
The first day is long. Fes to Merzouga covers approximately 470 km and usually requires 7–8 hours of driving before sightseeing, lunch and comfort stops are added.
Temperatures change significantly. Conditions can be very different between the Middle Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Bring layers, particularly outside summer, as desert mornings and nights can be cold.
The camel ride is optional. If you do not want to take the camel trek, a 4×4 transfer can take you to the desert camp instead.
Your luggage is transferred to camp by 4×4. You do not need to carry your main luggage on the camel, although a small overnight bag can be more convenient.
The standard itinerary uses one camp night and one hotel or lodge night in Merzouga. If you want both nights at the desert camp, request this before booking so availability and any price difference can be confirmed.
Lunches and personal expenses are separate. Carrying some Moroccan dirhams is useful for meals, drinks, entrance fees, small purchases and optional tips.
Plan your arrival in Marrakech
The tour normally finishes in the evening. We recommend staying in Marrakech that night rather than planning a tightly timed flight or train connection. Share your arrival and onward travel plans when you enquire, so pickup and drop-off can be agreed in advance.
Questions about your four-day Sahara journey
How much does the private 4-day Fes to Marrakech tour cost?
The indicative rate for two travelers is €569 per person. The table ranges from €349 per person for a private group of 10 or more to €1,138 for a solo traveler. These are group-size rates, not an average market price. Travel dates, accommodation category and availability can affect the final confirmed price.
What is typically included in the tour package?
The Fes to Marrakech desert tour includes private transportation, an English-speaking driver-guide, three nights of accommodation, dinner and breakfast at the overnight properties, a sunset camel trek, a private 4×4 Merzouga excursion, luggage transfer to camp, pickup in Fes and drop-off in Marrakech.
What is the day-by-day itinerary?
Day 1 travels from Fes through Ifrane, the cedar forest and Ziz Valley to Merzouga, where you check into a hotel or lodge for a relaxed first evening. Day 2 explores the Merzouga desert by 4×4, followed by a sunset camel trek and an overnight stay at the desert camp. Day 3 travels through Rissani, Todra Gorge and Tinghir to Dades Valley. Day 4 continues through Skoura, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.
How long is the drive each day?
Allow approximately 7–8 hours of driving on Day 1, 4–5 hours on Day 3 and 6–7 hours on Day 4, excluding sightseeing, meals and breaks. Day 2 is different: the local 4×4 excursion lasts approximately 4–6 hours including visits and stops, with around 50–80 km covered depending on the route.
What kind of vehicles are typically used?
Vehicle type depends on group size and availability. Smaller bookings generally use a private 4×4, medium-sized groups use a minivan such as a Mercedes-Benz Vito or Ford Tourneo Custom, and larger groups travel by minibus.
What are the typical accommodation standards at the desert camps?
The desert camp accommodation included with this tour uses a private en-suite tent. Different comfort categories can be requested, including luxury desert camp options, subject to availability.
Is it possible to customize the itinerary?
Some elements can be adjusted on a private tour, but changes must remain realistic given the driving distances. One available change is spending both Merzouga nights at the desert camp replacing the first night’s lodge or hotel stay. Ask before booking so we can confirm availability, arrangements and any price difference.
What common pickup and drop-off points are used?
Pickup is normally from your hotel or riad in Fes, or an agreed nearby vehicle-accessible meeting point. The time and location are confirmed before departure. At the end of the tour, drop-off is at your Marrakech hotel or riad, or the closest vehicle-accessible point if your accommodation is inside a pedestrian-only section of the medina.
What is the typical group size?
There is no fixed shared group size because this is a private tour. Transport is selected according to the number of travelers in your booking.
What is the best time of year to take this tour?
Spring and autumn generally offer moderate conditions. Winter nights in the Sahara can be cold, while summer afternoons around Merzouga can be extremely hot. The tour can operate year-round, subject to weather and road conditions.
What dietary accommodations can be arranged?
Vegetarian and many common dietary requirements can usually be accommodated. Tell us about dietary needs before the tour so the desert camp and other accommodation providers can prepare accordingly.
How is luggage handled during the journey?
Your luggage travels in the tour vehicle. For the desert camp night, luggage can be transferred separately by 4×4, so you do not need to carry it on the camel. A smaller overnight bag can make the camp stay easier.
Who operates this tour?
Complete Morocco is operated by Pro Morocco Tours SARL, a registered Moroccan tour operator and tourist transport company based near Merzouga. Trade register no. 20253 (Errachidia); ICE 003873732000068. Contact us if you would like current business documentation before booking.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the booking terms. Please refer to Complete Morocco’s current cancellation policy before paying your deposit.
Can airport pickup be arranged?
Airport pickup may be arranged depending on your arrival time and how it fits the first day’s route. Provide your flight details when requesting the tour so the pickup can be confirmed in advance.
What does the fourth day add compared with the three-day tour?
It adds a hotel or lodge night near Merzouga and a full day exploring the desert region by private 4×4 before the sunset camel trek and camp night. The three-day tour continues onward the morning after its camp stay. The main transfer days remain long in both itineraries. Compare the 3-day Fes to Marrakech tour.
Can I reach the camp without riding a camel?
Yes. A 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead of the camel trek and is included when used as the alternative. Tell us before departure so we can organize your arrival. Luggage transfer to and from camp is included.
Can I fly out of Marrakech on the final evening?
Arrival is normally in the evening and can change with traffic, weather and sightseeing stops. We recommend staying in Marrakech that night and avoiding a tightly timed flight or train connection. Share onward travel plans before booking.
