TWO CITIES. FOUR DISTINCT OVERNIGHTS.

Five days from Marrakech to Fes, with room for Skoura

This private 5-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour connects two imperial cities through the High Atlas, Skoura Oasis, Dades Valley and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Four overnight stays break the route into distinct experiences: Skoura, Dades, a Merzouga hotel or riad, then a desert camp.

The extra day compared with our four-day route belongs to southern Morocco. Stay in Skoura instead of continuing straight to Dades, visit Kasbah Amridil and follow the Rose Valley toward Boutaghrar, with an off-road route possible when conditions and vehicle arrangements allow.

In Merzouga, settle into your hotel first. The following day is dedicated to private 4×4 exploration, Khamlia and the surrounding desert before your sunset camel trek and camp night. On Day 5, travel through the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas to Fes.

THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

Your 5-day Marrakech to Fes itinerary

Follow the route in overnight order: Skoura, Dades Valley, Merzouga hotel, then desert camp. Times are estimates, not arrival guarantees. The Day 4 excursion time includes visits and stops.

Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Skoura

Your journey begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech before climbing into the High Atlas Mountains. Follow the winding road across the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where stops at selected viewpoints allow you to appreciate the high mountain valleys, terraced slopes, and Amazigh villages scattered across the landscape. As you descend the southern side of the mountains, the scenery becomes increasingly dry and ochre-colored, marking your entrance into Morocco’s pre-Saharan region.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar built almost entirely from earth and clay. Take time to explore its narrow passageways and traditional houses on foot, with panoramic views from the upper part of the village. Afterward, continue to Ouarzazate, where an optional visit to Atlas Film Studios can be arranged at additional cost, time permitting, for guests interested in seeing some of the sets and backdrops connected with Morocco’s film industry.

From Ouarzazate, make the short journey toward Skoura, where an extensive palm oasis conceals old kasbahs, farms, and small villages among thousands of date palms. Rather than continuing farther on the first day, settle into your accommodation within or near the oasis and enjoy a quieter evening surrounded by the landscapes of southern Morocco.

Night 1: Skoura hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 240–250 km

Approx. driving time: 4½–5 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and breaks

Day 2: Skoura ⇢ Kasbah Amridil ⇢ Boutaghrar ⇢ Dades Valley

After breakfast, begin with a visit to Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved historic kasbahs in the Skoura Oasis. Step inside to discover its earthen architecture, courtyards, towers, traditional rooms, and agricultural spaces, offering a closer look at how large families once lived and worked within these fortified homes.

Continue toward the Valley of Roses before leaving the main road for the more secluded landscapes around Boutaghrar. Depending on road conditions, part of the journey can follow an off-road track through rocky valleys, isolated Amazigh settlements, and striking red-earth scenery. This slower route gives the day a more local character, with opportunities to stop in the countryside and, when possible, meet a nomadic or semi-nomadic family over traditional mint tea.

Later, continue toward the Dades Valley, where cultivated terraces and small villages sit beneath rugged cliffs and unusual geological formations. Take time for panoramic stops as you enter the valley before arriving at your hotel or riad, with timing dependent on the route and visits, leaving the remainder of the day free to enjoy the surroundings at a relaxed pace.

Night 2: Dades Valley hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 100–130 km, depending on the off-road route

Approx. driving time: 3–4 hours as an indicative estimate; the chosen road or off-road route affects the actual duration. Visits, lunch and breaks add time

Day 3: Dades Valley ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel toward Tinghir, where a long ribbon of date palms and cultivated gardens creates one of the most impressive oasis landscapes in the region. Continue a short distance into Todra Gorge, where immense limestone cliffs rise dramatically on either side of the canyon. You will have time to walk through the gorge, take photographs, and enjoy the cooler setting before continuing toward the Sahara.

The route then crosses southeastern Morocco toward Rissani, a historic trading town closely connected with the old caravan routes of the Tafilalet. If you pass through on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, a stop may be possible, if timing allows, during one of the town’s main souk days, when people from the surrounding desert communities arrive to trade vegetables, spices, household goods, livestock, and other regional products. From Rissani, continue toward Merzouga as the dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to dominate the horizon.

Arrive in Merzouga later in the afternoon and check into your hotel or riad near the dunes. This evening is intentionally kept relaxed rather than immediately adding the camel trek, giving you time to enjoy your first views of the Sahara and rest before dedicating the following day entirely to exploring the desert.

Night 3: Merzouga hotel or riad. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. distance: 270–280 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours excluding Todra Gorge, lunch, the Rissani market visit when applicable, and breaks

Day 4: Merzouga 4×4 Desert Exploration ⇢ Khamlia ⇢ Nomadic Family ⇢ Sunset Camel Trek ⇢ Desert Camp

After breakfast, set out in a private 4×4 to discover the landscapes surrounding the Erg Chebbi dunes. Follow desert tracks away from the paved roads toward Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical traditions, before continuing through the black-desert terrain around the former Mifis mining area. The route reveals a much broader side of Merzouga than the dunes alone, with open plains, isolated settlements, and impressive views across the Sahara.

Subject to local availability, continue farther into the desert for the opportunity to visit a nomadic family, share mint tea, and learn more about daily life in this remote environment. Depending on seasonal conditions, the excursion may also include the lake near Merzouga and other viewpoints around Erg Chebbi. The schedule remains flexible, allowing time for photographs, conversations, short walks, and a leisurely lunch rather than moving quickly between stops.

Later in the afternoon, return to the edge of the dunes and meet your camel caravan for a trek across Erg Chebbi planned around sunset and adjusted to conditions. Guests who prefer not to ride can reach the camp by 4×4, while luggage is transferred separately. Arrive at your desert camp, settle into your private en-suite tent, and enjoy dinner followed by traditional music around the fire beneath the Sahara sky.

Night 4: Merzouga desert camp, private en-suite tent. Dinner and breakfast included.

Approx. 4×4 distance: 50–80 km, depending on the route and stops

Approx. excursion time: 4–6 hours including visits and stops; this is not continuous driving

Day 5: Merzouga ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Midelt ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Fes

If timing and conditions allow, wake early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast. After leaving Merzouga, begin the journey north through the Tafilalet region toward the Ziz Valley, where a panoramic viewpoint offers a striking perspective over thousands of date palms, traditional villages, and the green oasis cutting through the surrounding rocky landscape.

Continue toward Midelt, travelling through increasingly mountainous terrain as the Sahara gradually gives way to the Middle Atlas. After a lunch stop, continue toward the cedar forests near Azrou, where you may spot Barbary macaques among the trees; sightings are not guaranteed and wildlife should not be fed. From here, travel onward to Ifrane, known for its cooler climate, landscaped streets, and distinctive alpine-style architecture.

The final section of the journey leads through the greener countryside of the Middle Atlas toward Fes. Arrival is generally in the evening and may be later, depending on traffic and the number of stops made during the day. Your driver will take you to your hotel or riad, or to the nearest vehicle-accessible point if your accommodation is located inside the pedestrian streets of the medina.

Finish: Fes hotel, riad or nearest vehicle-accessible point. Accommodation tonight is not included.

Approx. distance: 470 km

Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and comfort breaks

Practical details before you travel

The final day is long. Merzouga to Fes covers approximately 470 km and usually requires 7–8 hours of driving before sightseeing, lunch and comfort stops are added.

Temperatures change significantly. Conditions can be very different between the Middle Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Bring layers, particularly outside summer, as desert mornings and nights can be cold.

The camel ride is optional. If you do not want to take the camel trek, a 4×4 transfer can take you to the desert camp instead.

Your luggage is transferred to camp by 4×4. You do not need to carry your main luggage on the camel, although a small overnight bag can be more convenient.

The standard itinerary uses one camp night and one hotel or lodge night in Merzouga. If you want both nights at the desert camp, request this before booking so availability and any price difference can be confirmed.

Lunches and personal expenses are separate. Carrying some Moroccan dirhams is useful for meals, drinks, entrance fees, small purchases and optional tips.

Off-road vehicle arrangements. The Merzouga excursion uses a private 4×4. The optional, condition-dependent Boutaghrar track also requires a suitable vehicle. We confirm arrangements for your group size in the quote, including when the main transfer vehicle is a minivan or minibus.

Pack for varied terrain. Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, layers and a small overnight bag. Kasbah lanes, dunes and canyon paths can be uneven; discuss mobility needs before booking.

Visits are respectful and condition-dependent. Family visits depend on local availability; ask before taking photographs. The Merzouga lake is seasonal, and flowering in the Rose Valley is seasonal too.

Plan your arrival in Fes

The tour normally finishes in the evening. We recommend staying in Fes that night rather than planning a tightly timed flight or train connection. Share your arrival and onward travel plans when you enquire, so pickup and drop-off can be agreed in advance.

What are the main highlights of this Marrakech to Fes itinerary?

Highlights include Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, the Erg Chebbi dunes and sunset camel trek in Merzouga, a private 4×4 desert excursion with Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a family visit subject to availability and the seasonal lake when conditions allow, the Ziz Valley, the cedar forest and Ifrane.

How is this different from the 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour?

Both our 4-day and 5-day Marrakech to Fes tours include a full Merzouga desert exploration. The main difference is that this 5-day itinerary adds an overnight stay in Skoura before Dades Valley, spreading the southern Morocco section over an additional day and allowing a slower overall pace.

What type of vehicle is used?

Vehicle type is matched to group size. Smaller groups generally use a private 4×4, medium-sized groups travel by minivan, and larger bookings use a minibus. The dedicated Merzouga desert exploration is carried out by 4×4.

What is the best time to visit Morocco for this desert tour?

Spring and autumn generally provide comfortable conditions across the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. Winter can bring cold desert nights, while summer afternoons in Merzouga can be very hot. The tour can operate throughout the year, subject to road and weather conditions.

Is it possible to customize the itinerary?

Some adjustments are possible because this is a private tour, provided they remain realistic within the route and driving distances. One available change is spending both Merzouga nights at the desert camp by replacing Night 3’s hotel or riad; Night 4 is already at camp. Availability and any price difference are confirmed before booking.

Private tour vs. group tour, what’s the difference?

A private tour is reserved for your booking and includes your own vehicle and driver-guide. A group tour combines travelers from separate bookings and generally follows a more fixed schedule.

What should I pack for the trip?

Bring comfortable clothing, layers for cooler mornings and evenings, sun protection, walking shoes and any personal medication. A smaller overnight bag can be useful for the desert camp even though your main luggage is transferred for you.

Is travel insurance included?

No. Travel insurance is not included in the tour price and should be arranged separately if required.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the booking terms. Please refer to Complete Morocco’s cancellation policy before paying your deposit.

Are there options for solo travelers?

Yes. Solo travelers can book the tour privately. Because the vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for one booking, the per-person price is higher for a solo traveler than for a larger group.

What dietary accommodations can be arranged?

Vegetarian and many common dietary requirements can usually be accommodated. Tell us about dietary needs before the tour so the Skoura, Dades and Merzouga accommodation providers can prepare accordingly.

What payment methods are accepted?

After availability and the final price are confirmed, the required deposit can be arranged using the payment methods offered with your booking, including PayPal, bank transfer, or Wise.

What can I do in Fes after the tour ends?

After the tour ends in Fes, you can stay and explore the city or continue your Morocco trip farther north. We can arrange a guided Fes tour, a Chefchaouen day trip, or other onward services separately.

How do I book this tour online?

Send your dates, group size and preferred accommodation category through the booking form. We will check transport and accommodation availability in Skoura, Dades Valley and Merzouga before confirming the itinerary and final price. Once you approve the details, the required deposit secures the booking.

What does the lowest price apply to?

The €449 per-person rate applies to a private group of 10 or more. For two travelers, the indicative rate is €689 per person. These are your own party sizes, not shared seats. The table does not guarantee every accommodation category at the same price; your dates and chosen stays determine the quote.

Can I catch a flight or train from Fes on Day 5?

The final day involves around 7–8 hours of driving before lunch and sightseeing stops. Avoid a tightly timed onward connection and plan to stay in Fes that night. Share fixed travel plans before booking.

Are the Boutaghrar track and family visits guaranteed?

No. The track depends on road and weather conditions and suitable vehicle arrangements, which we confirm in your quote. Family visits depend on local availability. The itinerary can be adjusted when these experiences are not possible.

Is the entire desert camp private?

Your tent is private, as are your tour vehicle and driver-guide. The camp and hotels may host other guests.
