NORTHERN MOROCCO. IMPERIAL CITIES. TWO SAHARA NIGHTS.

7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Desert Tour Overview

This Tangier to Marrakech desert tour connects northern Morocco with the Sahara in seven days and six nights. Start in Tangier, stay in Chefchaouen, visit Volubilis and Meknes, then spend two nights in Fes with a full guided medina day. Continue through the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley to Merzouga before traveling west through Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou.

The difference is how your desert stay is arranged. After the long drive from Fes, your first Merzouga night is in a hotel or riad. The next day is reserved for private 4×4 exploration around Erg Chebbi, Khamlia and local desert communities, followed by your camel trek and camp night. You have time in the Sahara without trying to fit the excursion into a transfer day.

Our private Morocco tours from Tangier are planned around your party, arrival details and choice of accommodation. Book this one-way crossing for a week-long trip ending in Marrakech, or ask our team to reshape it into six or eight days. The standard route has two long driving days, but it also gives you a city day in Fes and a local desert day between transfers.

YOUR SEVEN-DAY ROUTE, IN DETAIL

Tangier to Marrakech via Chefchaouen, Fes & Merzouga: Itinerary

The main intercity stages cover approximately 1,470 km, plus local Fes transfers and the 50–80 km Merzouga excursion. Distances are planning estimates. Driving times exclude sightseeing, meals and breaks; weather and road conditions can affect arrivals. Day five’s 4–6-hour estimate is for the whole local excursion, including stops.

Day 1: Tangier ⇢ Rif Mountains ⇢ Chefchaouen

Your private Tangier to Marrakech tour begins with pickup from your Tangier accommodation, airport or agreed ferry terminal. Send us your arrival details so the meeting point and departure time can be arranged. Tanger Ville and Tanger Med are different ports; a Tanger Med pickup changes the first transfer and must be included in your quote.

The road turns inland toward the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen. Settle into your riad, then use the available afternoon to explore the blue medina, browse small shops and find a terrace around Outa el Hammam square. This is your northern Morocco overnight before the journey toward the imperial cities.

With an early arrival and enough daylight, you can walk toward the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at your own pace. The walk is optional and involves an uphill path. A late ferry or flight reduces your Chefchaouen sightseeing time; arrive the previous evening if a longer visit is a priority.

Approx. distance: about 115 km from central Tangier

Approx. driving time: 2–3 hours, excluding arrival formalities and stops

Overnight: Chefchaouen

Meals: Meals at your own expense

Day 2: Chefchaouen ⇢ Volubilis ⇢ Meknes ⇢ Fes

Leave Chefchaouen after breakfast for Volubilis. Explore the Roman archaeological site on foot, with time to see its mosaics, columns and surviving street plan. Entrance tickets and a specialist site guide are separate from the package unless your written quote includes them.

Continue to Meknes for a visit around the imperial city. The Bab Mansour area and nearby streets introduce a different side of northern Morocco between the blue medina and Fes. Access to individual monuments can change, so the stops are arranged around opening hours and the time available.

Reach Fes later in the day and check into your riad for the first of two nights. You will have a dedicated guided visit tomorrow, so there is no need to fit the medina into the evening of this transfer day. Dinner is at your own expense, with suggestions available from the team.

Approx. distance: about 260 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding visits, lunch and breaks

Overnight: Fes

Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Guided Tour of Fes ⇢ Royal Palace ⇢ Mellah ⇢ Fes el-Bali

Meet your licensed local guide for a day in Fes, also spelled Fez. Begin with the Royal Palace gates and the Mellah area before entering Fes el-Bali. Your guide helps you navigate the lanes and understand the working medina, from food stalls and neighborhood workshops to its religious and educational heritage.

The visit can include a madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine area and a tannery viewpoint, with the sequence set around access and opening hours. The mosque interior is not part of the visit for non-Muslim guests. Monument admission is separate, and shopping is optional; tell your guide which crafts or historical places interest you most.

Return to the same riad for a second night. Two nights in the same Fes riad give you a day without a long intercity drive and time to prepare a smaller bag for the desert portion of your private Morocco tour.

Approx. distance: about 10–30 km of local transfers

Approx. driving time: short local transfers; most sightseeing is on foot

Overnight: Fes

Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Middle Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga

Travel south from Fes toward Ifrane and the cedar forest near Azrou. The Middle Atlas section brings mountain roads, forest stops and a change of scenery before the longer drive toward Midelt. Barbary macaques may be seen; sightings are not guaranteed. Do not feed the wildlife.

After a lunch break along the route, continue toward the Ziz Valley. A viewpoint over the palm groves gives you time out of the vehicle before the final approach to southeastern Morocco. This is one of the longest travel days, so your driver balances stops with the arrival time.

Your first Sahara-area night is in an en-suite hotel or riad in Merzouga, rather than at camp. Have dinner and settle in beside the desert. The camel trek is planned for tomorrow after your local 4×4 excursion, so it does not depend on reaching the dunes before sunset after the drive from Fes.

Approx. distance: about 470 km

Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours, excluding sightseeing, meals and breaks

Overnight: Merzouga hotel or riad

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 5: Merzouga ⇢ 4×4 Desert Exploration ⇢ Khamlia ⇢ Nomad Family Visit ⇢ Desert Camp

Spend the day around Erg Chebbi with your private 4×4 and driver. Visit Khamlia for its Gnawa music traditions, meet a nomad family when the hosts are available, and explore the desert landscapes around the dunes. The route can also take in the former mining area at Mifis and Dayet Srji, a seasonal lake whose water and birdlife depend on recent conditions.

This full Merzouga exploration day is the main reason to choose the seven-day itinerary. You have time for local stops without another long transfer, with the route adjusted to weather, access and the people you are visiting. Lunch and optional quad biking or dune buggy activities are extra.

Later, join your camel trek planned around sunset toward the desert camp. The ride takes approximately one hour each way, depending on the camp and dune conditions; a 4×4 transfer is available instead. Luggage is transferred to and from camp. Settle into your private en-suite tent, then enjoy dinner and the evening at camp.

Approx. distance: about 50–80 km around Merzouga

Approx. driving time: 4–6 hours for the local excursion including stops, plus camp transfer

Overnight: Merzouga desert camp

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 6: Merzouga ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Dades Valley

Watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at camp, then rejoin your vehicle for the journey west. The route passes Rissani, a historic trading town in the Tafilalet region. A market stop can be arranged when it fits the day and local activity; it is not presented as a guaranteed market event on every departure.

Continue toward Tinghir and the palm groves at the approach to Todra Gorge. Take a walk between the canyon walls or a shorter photo stop according to your preference and mobility. Your driver coordinates the stop before the onward journey into the Dades area.

Arrive in the Dades Valley for your final included overnight. Ask about a viewpoint stop at the Monkey Fingers formations if your hotel approach and timing allow. Dinner is included at your hotel or riad, with breakfast before the last stage to Marrakech.

Approx. distance: about 275 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing, meals and breaks

Overnight: Dades Valley

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 7: Dades Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Marrakech

Follow the Valley of Roses through Kelaat M’Gouna toward Ouarzazate. The last day of your Tangier to Marrakech Sahara tour combines the southern kasbah route with the High Atlas crossing. An optional Atlas Film Studios visit can be arranged at additional cost, time permitting.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou for a walk through the earthen ksar and views across the Ounila Valley. Allow for steps and uneven paths; your visit can be shortened to suit your walking comfort. Then cross the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka, with breaks where the road and timing allow.

Finish in Marrakech, the city also known as Marrakesh, with evening drop-off at your hotel, riad or the nearest vehicle-accessible point to your accommodation. Stay in the city that night rather than planning a tight flight connection. A Marrakech overnight, guided visit or next-day airport transfer can be added to your quote; none is included in the standard seven-day price.

Approx. distance: about 350 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours, excluding sightseeing, meals and breaks

Overnight: No overnight included; tour ends in Marrakech

Meals: Breakfast

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Planning Your 7-Day Morocco Trip from Tangier

Confirm the arrival point. Send the ferry terminal or airport, arrival time and flight or sailing details. A late arrival leaves less time in Chefchaouen. Tanger Med and Tanger Ville pickups need different timing.

Allow for the long transfer days. Fes to Merzouga is about 470 km; Dades to Marrakech is about 350 km. The private vehicle allows planned breaks, but sightseeing and meals add to the stated driving time.

Pack for cities, mountains and desert. Bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and layers. Winter evenings can be cold; summer afternoons in Merzouga can be very hot. Your driver adjusts local stops to the conditions.

Keep the camp transfer comfortable. Camel riding is optional, and a 4×4 alternative can be arranged. Luggage transfer to and from camp is included. A small overnight bag is convenient for the tent.

Plan Marrakech after the tour. Stay overnight after the day-seven arrival. If you plan to visit Majorelle Garden and the YSL Museum, book tickets online in advance through the official ticket channel. Ask us to quote a city stay and guided day if you prefer to extend the tour.

ANSWERS FOR YOUR NORTH-TO-SOUTH TRIP

Questions about Your Tangier to Marrakech Desert Tour

Is this a private or shared Tangier to Marrakech desert tour?

This is a private tour: your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking. You do not join a shared departure. Hotels and camps may host other guests, while your room or tent is private. Couples, solo travelers, families and groups can all request their own departure dates.

How much does a 7-day Tangier to Marrakech tour cost?

The price is provided on request for your dates, party size and accommodation category. For two travelers, we quote both the per-person rate and the complete party total. Your written offer confirms all six nights, private transport, the Fes guide, Merzouga 4×4 exploration, included meals and camp arrangements before you pay a deposit.

Can I customize the tour to 6 or 8 days?

Yes. A six-day version can remove the full guided Fes day, with a shorter visit arranged if timing allows, while retaining the Sahara hotel and camp nights. An eight-day version can add a Chefchaouen night or a Marrakech overnight and guided visit. These are alternative customizations, not all included together. We confirm the revised route, nights and price in your quote.

Can you pick us up from Tangier airport or a ferry port?

Yes. Request pickup from Tangier airport, your accommodation, Tanger Ville or Tanger Med and provide the exact arrival details. Tanger Med is outside the city and needs a different transfer arrangement. Ferry formalities and delays can reduce the time available in Chefchaouen on day one; an arrival the previous evening gives you more flexibility.

How much driving is involved from Tangier to Marrakech via Merzouga?

The main intercity stages total approximately 1,470 km, plus Fes transfers and the Merzouga excursion. Allow about 115 km and 2–3 hours on day one; 260 km and 4–5 hours on day two; 470 km and 7–8 hours from Fes to Merzouga; 275 km and 4–5 hours from Merzouga to Dades; and 350 km and 6–7 hours from Dades to Marrakech. These driving estimates exclude sightseeing, meals and breaks. Day three is a city visit; day five covers about 50–80 km on a 4–6-hour excursion including stops.

Which vehicles do you use for private tours from Tangier?

Vehicle selection depends on group size, luggage and availability. For 2–3 travelers, we generally use a 4×4 such as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX. Groups of 4–8 generally use a Mercedes Vito or Ford Tourneo minivan; larger parties use a minibus. The local Merzouga exploration uses a suitable 4×4. Your quote confirms the arrangements for your party.

Where do we stay, and does the desert camp have AC and a private bathroom?

All accommodations, including the desert camp, have private en-suite bathrooms, hot showers and AC/heating. The six nights are Chefchaouen, Fes, Fes, a Merzouga hotel or riad, a desert camp and Dades Valley. Choose Standard Comfort, Mid-Range or Premium from the listed options. We confirm the actual properties, room arrangements and any essential facilities before booking.

What is included in the Merzouga 4×4 day?

The private desert excursion includes Khamlia, a nomad-family visit when hosts are available, and a route around Erg Chebbi. Mifis and Dayet Srji can be included according to access and conditions; the lake is seasonal and wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The camel trek and camp arrival follow later. Quad biking, dune buggies and lunch are extra.

How long is the camel trek, and can I take a 4×4 instead?

The ride takes approximately one hour each way, depending on camp location and dune conditions. The outward trek is planned around sunset on day five, subject to conditions. An included 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead of camel riding. Luggage transfer to and from the desert camp is included; keep medication and immediate essentials with you.

Does the tour include a guided visit of Fes?

Yes. Day three is a dedicated Fes visit with a licensed local guide, between two nights in the same city. The route includes the Royal Palace gates, Mellah and Fes el-Bali, with individual sites arranged around access and opening hours. Monument tickets are separate unless specified in your quote. Shopping is optional.

Which meals are included on the seven-day itinerary?

Six breakfasts and three dinners are included. The dinners are at the Merzouga hotel or riad on night four, the desert camp on night five and the Dades accommodation on night six. Lunches, drinks and the other dinners are extra. Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements when requesting your quote so the properties can check them.

What is the best season for a Sahara desert tour from Tangier?

Spring and autumn generally offer more comfortable daytime conditions for the city visits and desert excursion. Summer can be very hot in Merzouga, while winter brings cold desert evenings and possible disruption on mountain roads. The tour can be arranged throughout the year, subject to weather, road access and accommodation availability.

What should I wear on this Morocco tour?

Wear comfortable walking shoes and light, loose clothing for daytime visits. Clothes covering shoulders and knees are useful for city sightseeing and cultural settings. Bring a warm layer for mountain stops and desert evenings, plus a hat and sunglasses. Long trousers are more comfortable for camel riding; winter departures need warmer outerwear.

What should I pack for the desert camp and long driving days?

Bring sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, comfortable shoes, a light scarf, charging cables and a power bank, plus your usual medication and personal essentials. A smaller overnight bag is convenient at camp, although your luggage is transferred to and from the camp. Keep some Moroccan dirhams for lunches, tickets, tips and small purchases.

Can I book this Tangier desert tour as a solo traveler?

Yes. You can book the route privately as a solo traveler. The vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for one booking, so a solo quote differs from a per-person rate for two or more guests. Tell us your dates, preferred accommodation category and room requirements for a complete solo-tour price.

Is the route suitable for families and travelers with mobility needs?

Tell us children’s ages and any mobility, seating or room requirements before booking. Fes and Chefchaouen involve uneven lanes and steps, Volubilis has exposed paths, and sand can be difficult around camp. We can discuss shorter walks and a 4×4 camp transfer, but accessibility must be checked for the actual properties. Days four and seven remain long drives.

Can I fly from Marrakech on day seven, and is a Marrakech visit included?

The tour normally reaches Marrakech in the evening after a long drive, so we recommend staying overnight and flying the following day or later. A Marrakech guided visit and overnight are not included in the seven-day route but can be arranged as an extension. For an independent visit, book Majorelle Garden and YSL Museum tickets online in advance and allow time for the city.

How do I book, and what are the cancellation terms?

Send your travel dates, traveler count, accommodation preference and Tangier arrival details. Our team checks availability and sends a written itinerary with the complete price, deposit and balance terms. Please review our cancellation policy before paying. A booking is confirmed only after the agreed arrangements and deposit have been accepted.
