5-Day Morocco Itinerary
This 5 day itinerary in Morocco covers a large distance in a short time, so the route is best for travelers who want a broad introduction to northern Morocco, Fes and the Sahara before finishing in Marrakech. Each day is planned around a clear destination, with driving distances and times shown below.
Your private Morocco journey begins with pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Casablanca. If you are arriving in Casablanca on a morning flight, your driver can instead meet you directly at Mohammed V International Airport so the tour can begin from there. Leaving Casablanca behind, travel north through the changing countryside toward the Rif Mountains, with comfortable stops for coffee, lunch, and photographs whenever needed.
As you approach northern Morocco, the scenery becomes greener and more mountainous, with rolling farmland and small towns gradually giving way to the foothills of the Rif. The journey is deliberately kept straightforward on your arrival day, without unnecessary sightseeing detours, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the trip and reach Chefchaouen at a comfortable pace.
Arrive in Chefchaouen in the afternoon or early evening and check into your riad. The remainder of the day is free to begin discovering the blue-painted medina, wander around Plaza Uta el-Hammam, or simply relax after the journey. Chefchaouen is especially atmospheric toward sunset, when the surrounding mountains and blue streets take on softer colors.
Approx. distance: 340 km
Approx. driving time: 5–5½ hours excluding lunch and comfort breaks
After breakfast, enjoy a final look at Chefchaouen before leaving the Rif Mountains and travelling south toward Fes. The drive takes you through the countryside of northern Morocco, giving you time to relax before arriving in the country’s spiritual and cultural capital around midday.
After arrival, meet your licensed local guide for a private exploration of historic Fes. Enter the UNESCO-listed Fes el-Bali medina, where centuries-old lanes lead through traditional souks, artisan quarters, madrasas, fountains, and historic neighborhoods. Highlights can include the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah, the Al-Qarawiyyin area, Nejjarine Square, and the famous Chouara Tanneries, with your guide adapting the visit to your interests and pace.
The afternoon gives you a rewarding introduction to the city’s history and craftsmanship without trying to cover every corner in a rushed manner. After the guided visit, your driver will take you to your riad or hotel, leaving the evening free to enjoy Fes independently and prepare for the journey toward the Sahara the following morning.
Approx. distance: 200 km
Approx. driving time: 3½–4 hours excluding the guided Fes visit, lunch, and breaks
Leave Fes after breakfast and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, beginning with a stop in Ifrane, known for its cool climate, landscaped streets, and distinctive alpine-inspired architecture. Continue toward the cedar forests near Azrou, where Barbary macaques are often seen among the trees, before travelling across the elevated plateaus toward Midelt.
After a lunch break around Midelt, continue south through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. The road eventually descends toward the Tafilalet region and the spectacular Ziz Valley, where a panoramic stop provides sweeping views over thousands of date palms, traditional villages, and cultivated plots following the river far below.
By late afternoon, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to appear as you approach Merzouga. Meet your camel caravan and ride into the dunes around sunset before continuing to your desert camp. Guests who prefer not to ride can reach the camp by 4×4 instead. After settling into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner and traditional music around the campfire beneath the Sahara sky.
Approx. distance: 470 km
Approx. driving time: 7–8 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, and comfort breaks
Wake early if you would like to experience sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast. After leaving Merzouga, travel toward Erfoud, a desert town known for the fossil-rich stone found throughout the surrounding region and for its location between the Sahara and the oasis valleys farther west.
Continue toward Tinghir, where the scenery changes noticeably as a vast palm oasis stretches beneath the mountains. A short drive from town brings you into Todra Gorge, where immense limestone walls tower above the narrow canyon. Take time to walk through the gorge, enjoy the cooler surroundings, and photograph one of southern Morocco’s most dramatic natural landscapes.
In the afternoon, continue toward the Dades Valley, passing cultivated fields, Amazigh villages, rocky cliffs, and unusual geological formations. Scenic stops can be made as you enter the valley before arriving at your hotel or riad, where you can relax and enjoy dinner after a more leisurely day on the road.
Approx. distance: 270 km
Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours excluding Todra Gorge, lunch, sightseeing stops, and breaks
After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel west through the landscapes of southern Morocco toward Skoura, an oasis of palm groves, old kasbahs, and agricultural villages. Continue to Ouarzazate, Morocco’s best-known filmmaking center, where an optional visit to Atlas Film Studios can be included if timing and your interests allow.
The main cultural stop of the day is Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar built from traditional earth and clay. Explore its narrow lanes and climb through the old village for views across the surrounding valley. Ait Ben Haddou has appeared in major productions including Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, adding another layer of interest to one of southern Morocco’s most remarkable historic sites.
After your visit, continue into the High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass on the final journey toward Marrakech. The road winds through dramatic valleys and mountain villages, with panoramic stops when time allows, before descending toward the Marrakech plains. Your tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point in the medina in the evening.
Approx. distance: 320–350 km
Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and comfort breaks

Why a private Morocco 5 days itinerary?
A private Morocco 5 day itinerary gives your booking its own vehicle and driver-guide from Casablanca to Marrakech. You are not coordinating departure times or comfort stops with travelers from unrelated bookings, which is especially helpful on a route that covers northern Morocco, the Sahara and the High Atlas Mountains in only five days.
The itinerary is designed for travelers asking how to spend 5 days in Morocco while still including both Chefchaouen and Merzouga. Rather than returning to Casablanca, the route keeps moving south and finishes in Marrakech, reducing unnecessary backtracking.
A local guide is included in Fes, while the remaining journey is handled by your private driver-guide. The Sahara experience includes the sunset camel trek and overnight camp, but the route does not include a dedicated full-day Merzouga 4×4 exploration because the tour continues toward Dades Valley on Day 4.
If your schedule allows six days or more, a longer itinerary gives you more time in Fes, the Sahara and southern Morocco. For travelers limited to five days, this route provides a broad introduction while keeping the itinerary logically connected from Casablanca to Marrakech.
Know Before You Go
This is a fast-paced itinerary. Five days in Morocco is enough to connect Casablanca, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech, but several days involve substantial driving.
The Fes tour is an afternoon guided visit. Day 2 begins in Chefchaouen, so the guided Fes visit focuses on the most important medina sights that fit the remaining time.
The camel trek is optional. A 4×4 transfer to the desert camp can be arranged instead, and your main luggage is transported separately.
There is no full Merzouga 4×4 exploration day. Khamlia, the Mifis mines, a nomad family visit and the seasonal lake require a longer itinerary with an additional day around Merzouga.
Pack for several climates. The route crosses the Rif Mountains, Middle Atlas, Sahara Desert and High Atlas Mountains, so temperatures can change considerably during the trip.
Entrance fees are separate. Carrying some Moroccan dirhams is useful for entrance fees where applicable, lunches, drinks and small personal expenses.
Pickup can be adapted within Casablanca. Hotel pickup is standard; airport pickup can be checked when your flight arrival time fits the Day 1 driving schedule.
Review the booking terms before paying your deposit. See the Complete Morocco cancellation policy or contact us if you have a question about your dates.
