Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour | 3 Day Sahara Experience

You can wake for sunrise over the Merzouga desert before breakfast at camp. After leaving the Erg Chebbi dunes, the desert tour continues west through the dry landscapes of southeastern Morocco. Depending on the day’s pace, there may be time for a stop around Rissani before continuing toward Tinghir.

At Todra Gorge, high limestone walls rise on both sides of the narrow valley. You will have time to walk through the gorge and see the river and palm-filled approaches before continuing toward the Dades Valley. This section of the tour takes you away from the open desert and into cultivated valleys, rock formations and Amazigh villages.

By late afternoon, arrive in the Dades Valley and check into your accommodation. Your private en-suite room, dinner and breakfast are included. Spending the second night here breaks up the journey between the Merzouga desert and Marrakech and puts you closer to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou for the following day.

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel west toward Ouarzazate. The road passes villages and kasbahs before reaching Ouarzazate, a city known for its connection to Morocco’s film industry. Productions filmed in this region include Game of Thrones, among many other international films and television series.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its earthen buildings stand beside the former caravan route linking the Sahara with Marrakech. You will have time to explore the site before returning to the road for the final part of your journey.

The last section of the 3 day tour crosses the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The mountain road eventually descends toward Marrakech, where the tour ends at your hotel, riad, or nearest vehicle-accessible point in the evening.

The tour includes private transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, pickup in Fes, drop-off in Marrakech, one night at a Merzouga desert camp, one night in the Dades Valley, dinner and breakfast at both overnight stops, a sunset camel trek across Erg Chebbi lasting roughly an hour each way, luggage transfer to camp and sandboards. Lunches, additional beverages, entrance fees, optional activities, tips and travel insurance are not included.

This 3-day tour covers the same route between Fes and Marrakech in fewer, longer driving days. The 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour spreads the same distance over an extra day, with shorter daily drives and more time at each stop, which suits travelers who prefer less time in the vehicle per day over a shorter total trip.

A private tour is operated only for your booking, with a vehicle and driver-guide assigned to your group. This gives you more flexibility with stops and comfort breaks. A group tour normally combines travelers from separate bookings and follows a more fixed schedule.

A practical Fes to Marrakech 3 days itinerary travels from Fes through Ifrane, Azrou, the Middle Atlas Mountains and Ziz Valley to Merzouga on day one. Day two continues from the Merzouga desert through Todra Gorge to the Dades Valley. Day three passes Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.

Spring and autumn generally provide comfortable conditions for this route. Winter can bring cold nights in Merzouga and cooler weather in the mountains, while summer temperatures in the Sahara can be very high during the afternoon. The tour can operate throughout the year, subject to road and weather conditions.

The route includes Ifrane, the cedar forest near Azrou, the Middle Atlas Mountains, Ziz Valley, Merzouga, the dunes of Erg Chebbi, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas Mountains. The Sahara desert experience also includes a camel trek and an overnight stay at a Merzouga desert camp.

Vehicle type depends on your group size and availability. For 2–3 travelers, we generally use a 4×4 such as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX. Groups of 4–8 generally travel by minivan, such as a Mercedes-Benz Vito or Ford Tourneo Custom. Larger groups travel by minibus. Day one covers approximately 470 km, day two around 275 km, and day three approximately 350 km. These driving estimates exclude sightseeing and other stops.

Yes. Solo travelers can book the trip as a private tour. Because the vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for one booking, the per-person cost is higher for a solo traveler than for couples or larger groups. The current solo rate is shown in the price table above.

Standard Comfort, Mid-Range and Premium categories are available. The Merzouga desert night is in a private en-suite tent with air conditioning at every category. Ideal Desert Camp, Tawada Luxury Desert Camp and Antares Desert Camp are examples of the three accommodation categories. The exact camp is confirmed according to availability for your dates.
