5 Day Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga | Sahara Desert Experience

After breakfast, leave Dades Valley and continue east toward Tinghir. The morning’s main visit is Todra Gorge, where you can take a short walk beneath the high rock walls before continuing toward the Sahara.

The route then crosses southeastern Morocco toward Merzouga. As the journey continues, the landscape becomes increasingly arid until the Erg Chebbi dunes appear on the horizon beside Merzouga.

On arrival, prepare for a sunset camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes. Your luggage is transferred separately to the desert camp, and a 4×4 transfer can be arranged if you prefer not to ride a camel. Settle into your private en-suite tent, have dinner and spend the night in the Sahara.

After breakfast at the desert camp, begin a private 4×4 excursion around the Merzouga Desert. The route follows desert tracks beyond the main village, allowing you to see more of the landscapes and communities surrounding the Erg Chebbi dune field.

Visit Khamlia village, known locally for Gnawa music, then continue toward former mining areas dating from the colonial period. The excursion also includes time with a nomad family. When seasonal conditions allow, the route can include the lake near Merzouga, although water is not present throughout the year.

Later in the day, return to Merzouga and check into your hotel or lodge for the third night. This additional day gives you time to explore the desert without another long point-to-point journey. Dinner and breakfast are included at your accommodation.

After breakfast, leave Merzouga and travel toward Rissani before beginning the journey west. Continue through the landscapes of southeastern Morocco toward Tinghir, with stops for comfort and lunch according to the day’s progress.

The afternoon route continues toward the Rose Valley before reaching Skoura Oasis. Here, visit Amridil Kasbah, one of the historic kasbahs associated with the oasis and its palm groves.

After the visit, continue to your accommodation in Skoura. Check into your private en-suite room and spend the final night of the tour in the oasis, with dinner and breakfast included.

After breakfast, leave Skoura and travel toward Ouarzazate. From here, continue toward Ait Ben Haddou before turning into the Ounila Valley, a quieter route through mountain settlements and cultivated valleys.

Follow the Ounila Valley toward Telouet. When Telouet Kasbah is open and accessible, time is provided for a visit before continuing toward the main High Atlas road. If access is not possible, the journey continues without the kasbah visit.

The final section crosses the High Atlas Mountains and descends toward Marrakech. Arrival is expected later in the afternoon or evening depending on road conditions and stops. Your driver drops you at your hotel or riad, or the nearest vehicle-accessible point.

The tour includes private transportation, an English-speaking driver-guide, four nights of accommodation, breakfasts and dinners at the included accommodations, a sunset camel trek, desert camp stay, 4×4 Merzouga excursion, luggage transfer and Marrakech pickup and drop-off. Lunches, entrance fees where applicable, additional beverages and optional desert activities are separate.

Day 1 travels from Marrakech through the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate to Dades Valley. Day 2 continues through Todra Gorge to Merzouga for the camel trek and desert camp. Day 3 explores Merzouga by 4×4. Day 4 travels through Rissani, Tinghir and the Rose Valley to Skoura, while Day 5 returns through Ouarzazate, the Ounila Valley and High Atlas to Marrakech.

The 5-day itinerary provides two nights around Merzouga, including a full 4×4 exploration day, and uses a more varied return route through Skoura and the Ounila Valley. The 3-day Marrakech desert tour covers the journey in less time and therefore has longer travel days and less time around Merzouga.

Day 1 involves approximately 6–7 hours of actual driving, Day 2 around 4–5 hours, and the Merzouga exploration on Day 3 approximately 2–4 hours by 4×4. Day 4 involves roughly 6–7 hours, while Day 5 is approximately 5–6 hours. These estimates do not include lunch, sightseeing or comfort stops.

The standard route includes one night in Dades Valley, one night at a Merzouga desert camp, one night at a Merzouga hotel or lodge and one night in Skoura Oasis. Standard Comfort, Mid-Range and Premium accommodation combinations are available subject to availability.

You stay in a private en-suite tent near the Erg Chebbi dunes, with dinner and breakfast included. The camp night follows the sunset camel trek, while a 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead for travelers who prefer not to ride.

The exact duration can vary according to the camp location and conditions on the day. The camel ride takes place around sunset on the way to camp. It is optional, and a 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead.

Spring and autumn generally provide moderate conditions for this route. Winter nights in the Sahara and High Atlas can be cold, while daytime temperatures around Merzouga can be very high during summer.

Bring comfortable clothing, suitable shoes, sun protection and layers for mornings and evenings. Personal medication and a small bag for items you want readily available at the desert camp are also useful.

Families can book the itinerary privately. Parents should consider the driving times, desert temperatures and suitability of camel riding and 4×4 travel for younger children. The camel trek can be replaced with a 4×4 transfer.
