THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes

This tour covers approximately 1,145–1,175 km over four days: 350 km to Dades, 275 km to Merzouga, a 50–80 km local 4×4 excursion and 470 km to Fes. Transfer-day driving times exclude sightseeing, meals and breaks; the 4×4 excursion takes approximately 4–6 hours including its stops. The additional day in Merzouga is the main difference from the 3-day Marrakech to Fes route, giving you time to explore the Sahara before continuing north to Fes.

Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Skoura ⇢ Dades Valley

Your 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes begins with morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech before heading south into the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, revealing wide mountain valleys, isolated Amazigh settlements, and constantly changing scenery. Several well-chosen stops along the way give you time to enjoy the views and take photographs before descending toward the warmer, more arid landscapes beyond the mountains.

The main cultural stop of the day is Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar built from traditional earth and clay. Walk through its narrow passages and climb toward the upper part of the village for impressive views over the surrounding valley. Its distinctive earthen towers and passageways make this one of the most memorable stops on your journey. From here, continue to Ouarzazate, where an optional Atlas Film Studios visit can be arranged at additional cost, time permitting, before travelling onward through the palm oasis of Skoura.

The afternoon drive continues through the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M’Gouna and into the Dades region, where cultivated fields, old kasbahs, rocky hillsides, and dramatic geological formations create a very different landscape from the morning’s mountain scenery. Ask about a brief viewpoint stop at the Monkey Fingers formations if your hotel approach and arrival time allow. By late afternoon, arrive in the Dades Valley, check into your accommodation, and have time to unwind before dinner.

Overnight in Dades Valley.

Approx. driving distance: 350 km

Approx. driving time: 6–7 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the optional Atlas Studios visit, and breaks

Day 2: Dades Valley ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, travel east from the Dades Valley toward Tinghir, approaching a fertile oasis filled with date palms and small farming communities. Continue to Todra Gorge, where steep limestone walls rise dramatically on either side of the canyon. Take some time to walk through the gorge, enjoy the riverbed and mountain setting, and stretch your legs before continuing farther toward the Sahara.

Later, make your way to Rissani, a historic trading town that has long served the communities of Morocco’s southeast. If you are passing through on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, a market stop may be possible if the schedule allows, when residents from the surrounding villages gather to trade food, spices, household goods, livestock, and locally produced items. After Rissani, the scenery becomes increasingly desert-like as you approach Merzouga and the impressive dunes of Erg Chebbi.

On arrival in Merzouga, check into your hotel or riad near the dunes and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at an easy pace. On this four-day Sahara itinerary, the hotel night gives you an evening near Erg Chebbi before the exploration day. Settle into your room, enjoy dinner and take in the dune-side surroundings after the drive. Your camel trek and desert-camp experience are saved for the following afternoon, after a full day exploring the Merzouga area.

Overnight at a hotel or riad in Merzouga.

Approx. driving distance: 275 km

Approx. driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing stops, lunch, the Rissani market visit when applicable, and breaks

Day 3: Merzouga Desert 4×4 Exploration ⇢ camel trek planned around sunset ⇢ Desert Camp

After breakfast, begin a private 4×4 exploration of the Merzouga region, following desert tracks around the Erg Chebbi dunes and discovering places that cannot be reached on the main paved roads. Visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical heritage, before continuing toward the old Mifis mining area and the broad, open desert landscapes beyond the main dune field.

The excursion also offers an opportunity to visit a nomadic family living in the desert surroundings, where you can share mint tea and gain an insight into a traditional way of life that remains closely connected to this environment. Depending on the season and water levels, your route may also include Dayet Srji, the seasonal lake near Merzouga. The day is flexible, with time for photographs, stops along the dunes, and a leisurely lunch before returning toward your accommodation later in the afternoon.

As the heat softens, meet your camel caravan and cross the Erg Chebbi dunes around sunset, watching the sand change color as the sun drops over the Sahara. Guests who prefer not to ride can reach the camp by 4×4 instead, while luggage is transferred separately. After arriving at your desert camp, settle into your private en-suite tent, enjoy dinner, and spend the evening with traditional music around the fire beneath the open desert sky.

Overnight at a desert camp in Merzouga.

Approx. 4×4 distance: 50–80 km, depending on the route and stops

Approx. excursion time: 4–6 hours, with flexibility throughout the day

Day 4: Merzouga Desert ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Midelt ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Fes

If you wish, begin your final morning in the Sahara by watching the sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at the camp. Once you leave Merzouga, the journey turns north through the Tafilalet region toward the Ziz Valley, where a panoramic stop provides sweeping views over an extensive belt of date palms, traditional settlements, and the river cutting through the surrounding rocky terrain.

Continue toward Midelt, travelling through increasingly mountainous scenery as the desert landscapes gradually disappear behind you. After a lunch stop, enter the Middle Atlas region and head toward the cedar forests near Azrou, where Barbary macaques may be seen; sightings are not guaranteed. From there, continue to Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town characterized by its cooler climate, landscaped streets, and alpine-influenced architecture.

The final stretch takes you from Ifrane toward Fes, passing through greener countryside as you approach the imperial city. Arrival is generally in the early evening, depending on traffic and the stops made during the day. Your driver will take you to your hotel or riad, or to the nearest point accessible by vehicle if your accommodation lies within the pedestrian-only lanes of the medina.

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Planning Your 4-Day Desert Trip from Marrakech

Expect one long final driving day. Merzouga to Fes is approximately 470 km. Stops around the Ziz Valley, Midelt, cedar forest and Ifrane break up the route, but you should still expect several hours in the vehicle.

Pack for changing temperatures. Conditions can be very different between Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Layers are particularly useful during winter, when mornings and nights around Merzouga can become cold.

The camel trek is optional. If camel riding is not suitable for you, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to the Sahara desert camp instead. Your luggage is transferred separately to and from the desert camp.

The normal Merzouga arrangement is hotel first, camp second. Night 2 is at a Merzouga hotel or riad, while Night 3 is at the desert camp after your 4×4 exploration and camel trek.

Both Merzouga nights can be spent at the camp on request. Tell us before booking so we can check availability and confirm any change in price.

Mobile reception varies in mountain and desert areas. Some properties provide Wi-Fi, but reliable access throughout the journey is not guaranteed.

Arrival in Fes

Arrival is generally in the early evening and varies with traffic and stops. Plan an overnight stay in Fes rather than a tightly timed onward connection. Pickup and drop-off details are confirmed with your itinerary.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Questions about Your 4-Day Marrakech to Fes Tour

What is the itinerary for the 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour?

Day 1 travels from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura and Dades Valley. Day 2 continues through Tinghir and Todra Gorge to Merzouga, where you stay at a hotel or riad. Day 3 is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert by 4×4 before a camel trek planned around sunset and overnight stay at the desert camp. Day 4 travels through the Ziz Valley, Midelt, cedar forest and Ifrane to Fes.

What is typically included in the 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour package?

The tour includes private transportation, an English-speaking driver-guide, three nights of accommodation, dinner and breakfast at each overnight stop, a private 4×4 Merzouga desert excursion, a camel trek planned around sunset, desert camp accommodation, luggage transfer to and from the desert camp, pickup in Marrakech and drop-off in Fes.

How does the 4-day tour differ from the 3-day version?

The main difference is the extra day in Merzouga. The 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour reaches the Sahara on Day 2 and leaves for Fes the following morning. The 4-day tour gives you a full additional day to explore the desert area by 4×4 before the camel trek planned around sunset and desert camp stay. The main transfer days remain long, including the final drive to Fes.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

Spring and autumn generally offer comfortable conditions. Winter can be cold at night in the Sahara and in the Atlas Mountains, while summer afternoons around Merzouga can be very hot. The tour can operate throughout the year, subject to road and weather conditions.

What vehicles are used, and how much driving is involved?

Vehicle type is matched to your party size and availability. For 2–3 travelers, examples include a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX 4×4; groups of 4–8 generally use a minivan such as a Mercedes Vito, and larger groups use a minibus. Day 1: approximately 350 km / 6–7 hours. Day 2: 275 km / 4–5 hours. Day 3: a local private 4×4 excursion of 50–80 km / 4–6 hours including visits and stops. Day 4: 470 km / 7–8 hours. Transfer-day times exclude sightseeing, lunch and breaks; specific models are confirmed subject to availability.

Is this a private or shared Marrakech to Fes tour?

This is a private tour: your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking. Your party can be a solo traveler, couple, family or larger private group. You do not share the tour vehicle with unrelated bookings, and sightseeing and comfort stops can be agreed within the route’s driving commitments. Hotels and camps may host other guests.

How do you accommodate specific dietary needs?

Vegetarian and many other dietary requirements can generally be accommodated at the hotels and desert camps. Tell us about any dietary requirements before the tour so we can notify the accommodation providers.

What are the luggage restrictions?

Normal travel luggage can be carried in the vehicle. Your luggage is transferred to and from the desert camp by 4×4, although taking a small overnight bag can be more convenient. If your group has unusually large or numerous suitcases, tell us beforehand so the appropriate vehicle can be arranged.

What can I do in Fes after the tour ends?

After you arrive in Fes, you can stay and explore the city or continue your Morocco trip north. We can arrange a guided Fes tour, a Chefchaouen day trip, or other onward services separately.

What is the cancellation policy?

Please review our cancellation policy for deposit, cancellation and refund conditions. Review these terms before confirming your booking.

Which accommodation is used on each of the three nights?

Night 1 is in the Dades Valley, Night 2 is at a Merzouga hotel or riad, and Night 3 is at the desert camp after your 4×4 day and camel trek. Choose Standard Comfort, Mid-Range or Premium from the named properties above. Rooms and tents are private and en-suite; the properties may host other guests. Confirm the exact stays in your quote.

How much does the private four-day tour cost?

The indicative price is €569 per person for two travelers. The €349 starting rate applies to a private party of 10 or more travelers; the solo rate is €1,138. These are per-person prices, not shared-tour tickets. Dates, accommodation category and availability affect your final quote.

Are Khamlia, Mifis and Dayet Srji part of the 4×4 day?

Day 3 includes exploration around Erg Chebbi with Khamlia and the old Mifis mining area in the planned route. A visit to Dayet Srji depends on the season, water levels and local access. The excursion covers approximately 50–80 km over 4–6 hours including stops, before the camel trek planned around sunset and camp stay. Local conditions can change the sequence or accessible stops.

Where are pickup and drop-off arranged?

Your driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel or riad on Day 1 and drops you at your Fes accommodation on Day 4. Where medina streets are closed to vehicles, we agree the nearest accessible meeting point. Share both accommodation addresses before departure so the locations and pickup time can be confirmed.

Can I book as a solo traveler?

Yes. The tour can be arranged for one traveler, with the vehicle and driver-guide reserved for that booking. The published solo rate is €1,138, subject to dates, accommodation category and availability. Because the transport costs are not shared with other members of your party, the per-person rate is higher than for two or more travelers.

Can I take a flight from Fes on the final evening?

Day 4 involves approximately 470 km and 7–8 driving hours before stops. Arrival is generally in the evening and depends on traffic, weather and sightseeing. Plan a night in Fes rather than relying on the road transfer for a tightly timed flight. Tell us your onward plans before booking so we can review the schedule.

Is this tour suitable for families and travelers with mobility needs?

Tell us children’s ages, seating requirements and any walking or mobility needs before booking. The itinerary includes long drives, uneven kasbah paths and sand around the camp. A 4×4 camp transfer is available instead of camel riding; suitable rooms, tents, activities and vehicle arrangements need to be confirmed for your party.

Is this a day trip from Marrakech to Fes?

No. This is a four-day, three-night journey with a Dades overnight, a Merzouga hotel or riad night and a desert camp night. It covers approximately 1,145–1,175 km including the local 4×4 excursion. Choose it to connect your Marrakech and Fes stays with the Sahara; it is not a same-day transfer or a return trip to Marrakech.
