Book a private desert tour in Morocco around the experience you want: a camel trek over the Erg Chebbi dunes, a night in an en-suite desert camp, or a longer journey with time for Khamlia, oasis villages and the southern valleys. Complete Morocco helps you choose the starting city, duration and accommodation before confirming your personal quote.
Start in Marrakech, Fes, Agadir or Errachidia. Choose a Marrakech round trip, cross between Marrakech and Fes via Merzouga, travel inland from Agadir, or fly into Errachidia for a shorter approach to the dunes. For a whole-country holiday starting in Casablanca, explore our separate Morocco itineraries.
Choose your desert tour in five decisions
- Choose the experience: Erg Chebbi sand dunes, a different southern desert route or a short excursion near Marrakech.
- Decide where you need to finish: Marrakech or Fes.
- Count the nights, then check where each one is spent.
- Decide whether you want a full Merzouga 4×4 exploration day.
- Compare the named accommodation and complete inclusions before comparing prices.
Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay: Choose Your Desert Experience
“Desert tour” is a broad description. A dinner excursion outside Marrakech and a journey across the Atlas to Merzouga are not interchangeable, even if both include camels and a camp setting. Begin with the landscape you want to experience, then see whether your available days make the journey practical.
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the sand-dune choice
Merzouga is a gateway to the Sahara beside the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco. It suits travelers whose priorities are a camel trek across sand, a desert camp night and time around the dunes. Our two- to five-day route comparisons below focus on this destination.
The approach is part of the journey: mountain roads, valleys, towns and different overnight settings. Your camp night may be the highlight, but a large part of a short tour is spent getting there and continuing onward. Choose a schedule that makes that balance work for your party.
Zagora and Agafay: compare the actual location
Zagora is associated with the Draa Valley and southern desert journeys. A tour advertised under that name should identify its camp and any onward dune destination; the town name does not establish that you will see Erg Chebbi. Ask for the route and overnight location rather than relying on a generic Sahara photograph.
Agafay is a rocky-desert setting near Marrakech. It can suit a short outing or overnight when you do not have time for the southeastern road journey. It does not provide the same sand-dune landscape as Merzouga. If Erg Chebbi is the reason you are coming, reserve enough days for it.
Read our Merzouga destination guide for the dunes and surrounding area, or explore Agafay near Marrakech if you need a shorter desert escape.
Marrakech Round Trip or Marrakech to Fes?
Choose your endpoint before choosing your accommodation tier. A round trip makes sense if your flights and remaining nights are in Marrakech. A one-way Sahara crossing makes sense when you are continuing to Fes, or traveling from Fes toward Marrakech. The right endpoint can save you a separate intercity journey later.
One-way does not mean short driving days. The route still crosses a large part of Morocco, and the Fes–Merzouga leg is substantial. What changes is how the desert journey fits into the rest of your holiday.
| Route family | Best fit | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech → Merzouga → Marrakech | Your holiday continues or ends in Marrakech | Shorter versions have a long return drive |
| Marrakech → Merzouga → Fes | You want the Sahara between the two cities | The final Merzouga–Fes day is a full transfer |
| Fes → Merzouga → Marrakech | You are traveling south from Fes | The first day is a long drive toward the dunes |
If you are undecided, send your flight times and the cities already booked. We can compare routes around those commitments rather than recommend a loop that creates unnecessary backtracking.
How Many Days Do You Need for the Sahara?
The most useful comparison is not simply “more days equals a better tour.” Each additional day changes something specific. Three days can divide a very long onward journey with a Dades overnight. Four days can add a Merzouga hotel or riad night and a full local exploration day. Five days can add a Skoura stay and more time in the southern valleys.
| Length | Nights | Main experience | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days | 1 camp night | A compressed Sahara visit with long transfers | Your window is fixed and you accept limited sightseeing time |
| 3 days | Dades + camp | A camp experience with a valley overnight | You want a short desert journey with more balanced staging |
| 4 days | Dades + Merzouga hotel/riad + camp | A full day exploring around Merzouga | You want more than arrival, camp and departure |
| 5 days | Dades + Merzouga hotel/riad + camp + Skoura | Desert exploration plus another southern stay | You want more time across the valleys as well as the dunes |
The table compares the overnight ingredients; their order depends on your direction. Read the day-by-day itinerary before choosing, particularly for five-day routes, where Skoura appears at a different stage of the journey.
What two days asks of you
A two-day Merzouga tour places a great deal of driving around one camp night. It is not a same-day desert excursion, and sightseeing cannot be as extensive as on a longer route. Choose it because the time limit is genuinely fixed, not because two days sounds almost the same as three.
Compare the two-day Marrakech desert round trip, two-day Marrakech to Fes crossing and two-day Fes to Marrakech tour. Check their driving commitments and avoid a tight flight connection at the end.
Why three days is a useful starting point
Three days adds a Dades overnight alongside the camp. You have more room for the road journey and sightseeing than on the two-day versions, although it remains a busy itinerary. There is no dedicated full day around Merzouga in these standard three-day routes.
This is often the right shortlist for travelers who want to experience the Sahara within a limited holiday. If Khamlia, a private 4×4 outing or a second desert-area night is important, move directly to the four-day comparison.
Compare Marrakech Desert Tours: 3, 4 and 5 Days
The three-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour combines a Dades stay with a desert camp night before returning to Marrakech. It works as a compact round trip, but the return from the Sahara is a long day. It is a better fit for guests comfortable spending substantial time in the vehicle.
The four-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour adds a hotel or riad night near the dunes before the camp. That creates a full day for a private 4×4 exploration, rather than asking you to fit it around arrival or departure. The main road distances still exist; the benefit is extra time in the desert area.
The five-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour includes a Skoura overnight as well. This changes the return journey and adds another southern accommodation setting. Compare the Draa, Skoura and Ounila stages on the itinerary if the journey back matters as much to you as the camp.
Our practical recommendation
Choose three days for a focused camp experience within a short window. Choose four when you want a complete Merzouga day. Choose five when you want that desert time plus a more developed southern route. Spending more on the tent cannot create an exploration day that the itinerary does not contain.
For a Marrakech holiday that also includes arrival, a guided city day and departure, review the seven-day Marrakech itinerary or eight-day itinerary from Marrakech. Those are broader holiday structures, so do not compare their day counts directly with a desert-only excursion.
Compare Marrakech to Fes Desert Tours
A one-way journey through Merzouga can turn the transfer between Marrakech and Fes into part of your holiday. The three-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour gives you Dades and a camp night before the final drive north. It is the compact option when Fes is your next base.
The four-day Marrakech to Fes tour adds a Merzouga hotel or riad stay and a full local exploration day. You reach the area before your camp evening, giving the Sahara a larger share of the itinerary.
The five-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour adds Skoura to the sequence. Compare the first stages carefully: the extra day gives the southern landscapes their own place in the route, rather than merely extending the same camp stay.
All three finish with the substantial Merzouga-to-Fes leg. An extra desert day does not shorten that drive. Plan to stay in Fes on arrival night and share any onward arrangements before confirming the tour.
Compare Fes to Marrakech Desert Tours
The reverse journey has the same broad ingredients but a different rhythm. You leave Fes for Merzouga on the first day, so the longest approach to the dunes comes early. Later, you travel west through the gorges and valleys before crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech.
The three-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour has a camp night followed by Dades. The four-day Fes to Marrakech tour starts with a Merzouga hotel or riad night, then a full desert day and camp night before Dades.
The five-day Fes to Marrakech tour adds Skoura after Dades. This is worth comparing if you want more time in the southern valleys and another overnight setting before reaching Marrakech. Browse the Fes desert tours collection when choosing your departure route.
For a first-day camp arrival, sunset timing depends on progress along the road and the season. In winter, the trek may start around or just after sunset, or be moved to the following morning. A hotel night before camp gives more flexibility, but weather and conditions still shape the plan.
Compare the Driving, Not Just the Map
Maps make the destinations look neatly connected, but mountain roads, sightseeing and meal stops fill the day. Driving estimates refer to time in the vehicle; they are not the full duration from breakfast to hotel check-in.
| Stage | Approx. distance | Approx. driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech–Dades | 350 km | 6–7 hours, excluding stops |
| Dades–Merzouga | 275 km | 4–5 hours, excluding stops |
| Merzouga–Fes | 470 km | 7–8 hours, excluding stops |
| Merzouga 4×4 exploration | 50–80 km locally | 4–6 hours for the outing, including visits |
The local 4×4 figure describes an excursion, not continuous driving for four to six hours. It should not be compared directly with the intercity transfer times. Ask which visits are planned and how much time is available at each.
Families should consider the cumulative effect of consecutive driving days. For any traveler, a longer route can be worthwhile if it adds a useful overnight stop. It is less helpful if the extra time is filled with more transfers that do not match your interests.
Desert Camps, Riads & Hotels: Choose Your Comfort Level
Accommodation is one of the clearest differences between private desert tour quotes. Compare the whole sequence: your Dades room, any Merzouga hotel or riad night, the camp tent and Skoura when included. An upgrade to the tent alone does not necessarily upgrade the other nights.
The table below uses property examples from our current four- and five-day tour pages. They show how our accommodation categories can be arranged. Availability, the selected route and your written quote determine the final properties; this table is not a reservation or a guarantee that every tour uses the same camp.
| Overnight stop | Standard Comfort | Mid-Range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dades Valley | Hotel Babylon Dades | Dar Blues | Eden Boutique Hotel & Spa |
| Merzouga hotel or riad | Riad Azawad | Riad Chebbi | Riad Serai |
| Merzouga desert camp | Ideal Desert Camp | Tawada Luxury Desert Camp | Tiziri Camp |
| Skoura | Kasbah Ait Ben Damiette | Kasbah des Cypres | L’Ma Lodge |
Dades Valley: a room between the mountain and desert stages
Hotel Babylon Dades, Dar Blues and Eden Boutique Hotel & Spa are examples used across the comfort categories. The practical questions are your room type, bed arrangement, dinner and breakfast, and any accessibility requirements. If a particular property matters to you, name it in the request rather than assuming it follows automatically from a category.
The Dades night also serves a route-planning purpose: it divides the journey between Marrakech and Merzouga. On a three-day tour, that overnight can be more important to the pace than an extra decorative feature in the camp tent.
Merzouga hotel or riad: why it comes before camp
Riad Azawad, Riad Chebbi and Riad Serai are examples on the longer desert routes. A hotel or riad night lets you arrive after a transfer, settle into a room and begin the next day’s exploration locally. The camp then becomes a separate part of your stay.
This is the distinction between “two nights around Merzouga” and “two nights at camp.” Read the overnight list carefully. Both can be arranged in different ways, but they are not the same booking.
Desert camp: compare the actual tent
Ideal Desert Camp, Tawada Luxury Desert Camp and Tiziri Camp appear among the property examples on these routes. Ask for the selected camp, tent category and bed configuration. If you prefer another camp we use, tell us so we can check its availability and the resulting quote.
Choose a private en-suite tent and tell us whether air conditioning or heating is essential. We will confirm the selected camp, tent category and operating arrangements in your quote; facilities can differ between properties.
Skoura: the additional stay on five-day routes
Kasbah Ait Ben Damiette, Kasbah des Cypres and L’Ma Lodge are the Skoura examples in the published tiers. Their place in the route differs by direction. Use the Skoura travel guide to decide whether an oasis stay adds something you want to your journey.
Your vehicle is private to your booking; hotels and camps may host other guests. Exclusive use of a property is a separate request. Confirm family-room arrangements and twin beds before the final booking, rather than relying on a photograph of a room that may be a different category.
Have two routes or accommodation categories in mind? Ask us for a private comparison quote with each night’s property, room arrangements and total clearly listed.
Private or Shared Morocco Desert Tours?
A private tour reserves the vehicle and driver-guide for your booking. It allows your party to discuss stops and practical needs within the agreed route, and your price depends partly on how many people share that private vehicle. It does not mean every public attraction or camp is exclusive to you.
A shared tour combines separate bookings around a common schedule. When comparing one with a private quote, check group size, pickup arrangements, rooming, language and whether the departure is confirmed. A lower shared price may be attractive, but it should be compared with the actual service rather than the same number of days alone.
The Complete Morocco routes linked in this guide are private itineraries. For two or three travelers, the vehicle may be a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX 4×4. Groups of four to eight generally use a Mercedes Vito or Ford Tourneo minivan, with a minibus for larger groups. Confirm the vehicle for your party and dates.
What Should a Sahara Desert Tour Include?
A useful quote separates the intercity transport, overnight stays and desert activities. Our standard short private routes typically include the vehicle and driver-guide, agreed pickup and drop-off, accommodation, dinner and breakfast at the itinerary’s overnight stops, and a camel trek or arranged 4×4 camp alternative. The selected tour’s written inclusions take priority.
Camel trek, camp transfer and luggage
The camel trek is planned around sunset, subject to arrival and conditions. It takes approximately one hour each way, depending on camp location and dune conditions. If you prefer not to ride, request a 4×4 transfer to the desert camp before departure.
Luggage transfer to and from the camp is part of our agreed camp arrangements. A small overnight bag can make arrival easier, even when your main suitcase is transferred. Sandboards are available at camp on our standard desert itineraries; ask the team about suitable use and conditions.
The full Merzouga exploration day
Do not confuse a 4×4 transfer to camp with a private 4×4 exploration day. The transfer gets you to your overnight accommodation. The exploration day gives you a local circuit, with planned stops such as Khamlia, a nomad-family visit subject to availability, and Dayet Srji when seasonal conditions make it worthwhile. Mifis may feature in the agreed route.
For Marrakech and Fes departures, a full Merzouga day is a key reason to choose four days over three. Our three-day Errachidia itinerary also includes it, while the four-day Agadir route reserves its third day for exploration.
Common extras to check
Lunches, additional beverages, entry fees, separately arranged local guides, optional quad biking or buggy activities, tips and travel insurance may be outside the price. Check each item rather than assuming “all-inclusive” means the same thing across operators.
A driver-guide’s services between cities are different from a dedicated local guide at a monument. If guided interpretation at a particular site is important, ask for it to be identified in the itinerary and quote.
Private Morocco Desert Tour Prices: What Shapes Your Quote
Start with your actual party size. A “from” rate for a large private group is not the price for a couple. Ask for both the per-person amount and the total for your booking, and make sure the quote names the accommodation category and travel dates.
Compare the same route, number of nights and services on both proposals. A camp-only rate, a shared departure and a private multi-day tour describe different products. A cheap headline cannot tell you whether there is a Dades hotel, a Merzouga riad night or a full exploration day.
Price tables can also be indicative. Availability, rooming, season and property choice affect the final offer, so this guide does not repeat a single price across routes that may have different costs. The linked tour pages provide their published rates; your written quote confirms what applies to your booking.
A practical quote-comparison checklist
- Same starting city, finishing city and dates.
- Same number of travelers in your own booking.
- Named property or clearly agreed category for every night.
- Exact bed configuration and private bathroom arrangements.
- Included meals, transfers and guiding services.
- Clear distinction between a camp transfer and a full 4×4 day.
- Optional activity costs, payment arrangements and cancellation terms.
Before paying, review our cancellation policy and ask about any unclear terms. Keep the confirmed itinerary and property list with the payment details so you know what has been agreed.
When to Go and What to Bring
Spring and autumn generally offer comfortable conditions for combining desert time with sightseeing. Winter can bring cold nights and challenging weather on mountain crossings. Summer afternoons can be very hot, so the timing of outdoor activities and the facilities at your accommodation matter.
Pack comfortable trousers for camel riding, closed shoes, layers for the evening, sunglasses and sun protection. Keep medication and essentials within reach during the driving days, and protect electronics from sand. Read our Morocco climate guide and check the forecast again shortly before travel.
Share children’s ages, dietary needs and any limits on walking or sitting for long periods before booking. A 4×4 transfer can replace the camel ride, but it does not make every camp or sightseeing stop accessible. The relevant property and route need to be checked for your party.
Morocco Desert Tours: Your Questions Answered
Which Morocco desert tour is best for a first visit?
Start by choosing the city you need to finish in. Three days gives a short camp-and-Dades journey; four adds a Merzouga hotel or riad night and a full exploration day. Five adds another southern stay. The best fit depends on your available time and tolerance for driving.
Is a two-day tour enough for Merzouga?
It can fit a camp night into a fixed schedule, but the transfers are long and sightseeing is compressed. Compare the driving carefully. Three or four days is more suitable when you want time beyond the essential overnight experience.
What is the difference between three and four days?
The standard four-day routes add a hotel or riad night around Merzouga and a full local exploration day before camp. Three-day routes include a Dades overnight and one camp night without that dedicated exploration day.
Does five days mean more nights at the desert camp?
Not on the standard routes compared here. The fifth day adds a Skoura stay alongside Dades, a Merzouga hotel or riad and the desert camp. The overnight order depends on the direction of travel.
Should I start in Marrakech or Fes?
Choose the direction that fits your wider itinerary and flights. Fes departures begin with the long journey toward Merzouga; Marrakech departures normally approach through the High Atlas and southern valleys. A one-way route avoids returning to a city when your next stop is elsewhere.
Are the hotels and camps guaranteed?
The named properties are examples from our published accommodation tiers. Your dates, category and final quote determine the actual booking. Confirm each property and room arrangement before paying the deposit.
Is a private tour the same as a private camp?
No. Your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved for your booking, and you have a private room or tent as agreed. Hotels and camps may host other guests. Exclusive property use must be requested separately.
How long is the camel trek, and can I skip it?
The camel trek takes approximately one hour each way, depending on camp location and dune conditions. It is planned around sunset, subject to arrival and conditions. A 4×4 camp transfer can be arranged instead.
Do the camp tents have private bathrooms and air conditioning?
Choose a private en-suite tent and tell us whether air conditioning or heating is essential. We will confirm the selected camp, tent category and operating arrangements in your quote; facilities can differ between properties.
Can I take a flight on the final evening?
Road conditions, weather and sightseeing can affect the arrival time. We recommend staying in the finishing city that night instead of planning a tight flight connection. Share any onward travel commitments before booking.
Can solo travelers and families book?
Yes. Request a private quote for your own party size. Share children’s ages, rooming preferences and mobility needs so transport, accommodation and activities can be checked. A solo private booking has a different per-person cost from a larger private group.
Are longer Casablanca itineraries covered here?
This hub focuses on two- to five-day departures from Marrakech, Fes, Agadir and Errachidia. Compare longer Morocco itineraries from Casablanca separately when you want imperial cities, the Sahara and more of the country in one holiday.
Can I start a desert tour in Agadir?
Yes. The four-day Agadir to Marrakech route travels through Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then the Valley of Roses and Todra Gorge to Merzouga. Day three is a private 4×4 exploration day. Day four returns through the Draa Valley, Agdez and the High Atlas to Marrakech.
Can you collect us at Errachidia Airport?
Yes. The three-day Errachidia desert tour starts at the airport or your accommodation, continues to Merzouga, includes a full desert exploration day, and returns through Rissani and Ziz Valley. Share your flight times so arrival and departure arrangements can be confirmed.
Can we customize our private Sahara tour?
Yes. Tell us your dates, starting and finishing cities, accommodation preferences and priorities. We will confirm what fits the driving distances and arrange a written itinerary. Optional activities and additional nights are quoted separately.
